Once and for all, proof that Macs are cheaper than PCs Let's put to rest the myth that an Apple computer will set you back more than a Windows PC. In fact, it'll cost you less.

Haven't we already been down this road? I heard this rumor about a year ago. Nothing came of it.

  • Not a BMW

So you're basically saying that Macs are the Hondas of the computer world

  • People trade computers after a year?

Are you kidding? Who would do that? It's enough of a pain transfering files, settings and applications after five years. It would be as dumb as trading a BMW after one year.

Once again, not on a Mac. Simply connect old computer to new computer, launch old computer in Target Disc mode, and run Migration Assistant. All settings transfer, all Apps (that you select) transfer, all users transfer. Depending on how much you have to transfer, it's effortless and fast. Even my smug old grandma could do it, and we all know how cool she'll look in the process.

Not debating the pros or cons of trading up in one year vs five years - just saying.

  • The hot Spot Effect

I recently had a conversation with someone about their dissatisfaction with the handmedown mac ibook that they had received in their office. It was their first experience with a Mac and they were very dissatisfied. We often met to chat and have coffee at a coffee place near Duke University which is frequented by Dukies, Academics, and local business folks and politicos. I suggested that she consider that her circa 2001 ibook might be the oldest computer at the hotspot.

I have routinely bought used macs for home use and it is wonderful how even the newest versions of the operating system work on them. Can you imagine putting vista on anything but a brand new machine, much less one that is 3 or 4 years old.

  • @ Zig Zag

Isn't it funny how the mere mention of someone liking a Mac brings out these mordant attacks from those on the other said telling that person how inferior their machine is and how they are brainless grandparents with rudimentary computing skills who only care about looking cool? It almost always starts in that direction. Why the constant need for Windows users/apologists to attack? I'm a PC user and a Mac user - they both have their uses. But do a Google on the subject and you'll come up with many, many, many more pages and sites from people who "hate" or "despise" Macs than you will Mac users who "hate" or have a problem with PC/Windows. Like 10 times more. There's one site that starts out by saying "I hate Macs and I hate Mac users. I have all my life". Really? All your life? What are you, 12? Seems like this is a subject better suited for the loony bin. And for you, Zig Zag, to post a link to that Mac "hate" site does nothing to further intelligent discussion, though how can there possibly be intelligent discussion over such a ridiculous topic as "Macs are better than PCs"? God, this is dumb.

You're not trading in a BMW. You are trading in a VW Bug.

Anyway, the problem of transferring files between machines is really impressively addressed by Apple. I got a new MacBook Pro. It asked me, after about one minute or so of answering a few other questions, if I had another Mac that I wanted to transfer everything from.

    I said 'Yes.'

I hooked up the old machine to the new one via firewire.

After about 40 minutes, everything (applications, my preferences, control panels, email accounts, etc) had been completely transferred to the new computer I just bought.

    Done.

    Try *that* in &^%$#@# Windowz.

  • PC USERS ANSWER THIS

You think macs are about being cool and inferior systems, instead of having some balls and running Linux or taking the plunge you respond by continuing to give hundreds of millions of dollars to one of the largest corporations in the world, one whose track record of monopoly, screwing users and design is laughable at best.

You guys make no sense. Get off Bill's dick, admit whats lurking in the back of your mind, that little nagging thought that you know to be true regardless of your feelings about the iphone, leopard, linux or anything else..........

    Vista blows.

  • @CHICKADEE

the uses for your computer are so simplistic they could be done on the OLPC, hell they could be done on a typewriter.

Oh one more thing, if you say that your pc has NEVER crashed in 5 years than you are a liar. Its as simple as that. Liar, that is a lie... your pants have burst into flames.

    OLPC? WTF is that?

As for a typewriter, I am not entirely clear on how I might do video editing on my typewriter. But, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

Well, it's not my PC. It is my server. It runs FreeBSD. It hasn't crashed in about six years.

    So there.

  • The real reason we buy PCs

The real reason we buy PCs is Apples ad campaign. The PC guy is hilarious and the Mac guy is just kind of smug and jerky.

I think that is a great reason. God forbid I would actually want to get any work done ......
