Don't tell people when you leave on a trip. Don't brag about a trip that you're taking. That's just a safety rule. Only tell people who need to know. Anybody could be overhearing it (auditorially or electronically or visually). Or if you tell someone, be foggy about the timing. "I'm going to Atlanta pretty soon..." is about as exact as you should go.
Don't make a big production out of leaving your place with a lot of luggage. Don't tell the taxi driver who drives you to the airport when you'll be back, or if you live alone - he doesn't need to know. He knows where you live and the fact that you're heading out - that's plenty.
Similarly, don't tell people your address. Unless they need to know.
Just by cutting down the people who know both where you live, and when you'll be gone, you're closing off opportunities for crafty thieves.
But somebody that smart should be able to find a good paying job somewhere.
