I was hoping when I saw the "help wanted" blurb, that it didn't mean you were leaving.
I've enjoyed your take on many things, you'll be missed.
Good luck.
Hard to write you will be missed when you are but a click or two away at Slate, a site I consider Salon's fraternal twin (I know they really have different parents, but they have a similar sensibility and uplifting readability). I read both daily, so won't miss you, but am looking forward to having a new person here to read while still catching up with you at Slate.
It’s been fun to read Machinist since its inception. Enjoy your new gig.
Of late so many good Salon writers have left for elsewhere, Michael Shearer, Sidney Blumenthal, and others. I don't think I said anything when the others departed but, somehow, your departure makes it seem like a tsunami.
As with the others, the best of luck. I've enjoyed reading all of you.
I haven't commented in Machinist before, but I will now to express my sadness at your departure.
I used to check Salon, Slate and TNR every day during my downtime at work. Now as my workload has increased, I've cut it down to just Salon—with your emigration I'll have to make time for Slate in my day again!
Best of luck at the new digs, and I hope to see more of the same. Don't go changing!
Farhad, you're one of my favorites. And I don't care for slate.com. I'll miss you!
PS: got your book from the library and liked it so much I bought it for my dad for his birthday. great work!
You probably won't be able to get away with playing so much Grand Theft Auto, but otherwise it sounds like you're making the right move.
Finally, a change for the better at Salon.com..
It would save me from ever having to visit Salon again. Congrats on the upgrade to a much, much better site. May you never have to share front page space with dispatches from the "Mommy Wars" again.
Well, a tech writer who doesn't know the first thing about tech leaving? What's not to celebrate!
POP (champagne!).
Don't let the door hit you on your way out, Farhad. Oh, and btw, if you want to stay in this business, you should read a book once in a while, maybe even start writing a bit of code. Would help...
Congratulations Farhad, I visit both Slate and Salon fairly regularly (and I reckon most visitors here do), so I'm delighted that we'll continue to be able to read you, no matter where you are.
The only thing I am afraid of is that Joan will replace your feature with something like, "Geek Grrls" where we will get endless articles from the Broadsheet staff about playing their Nintendo Wii's, how action games are inherently misogynistic and propagate violence against women and of course, valuable updates about new colors of iPhones.
God save us.
Good luck - I always enjoyed your column!
Oh, you will be sorely missed! I've enjoyed your work at Salon for so long, you're a household name. My husband practically expects me to say "Today in Salon, Farhad wrote about X" at least a couple times a week. Reading your columns helped fend off the boredom through two jobs (and believe me, there were days where I hit Refresh on Machinist, over and over, saying "C'mon Farhad, help me out here...") Now that I'm a stay-at-home mom and out of the tech scene, I always stumble over to the laptop with my coffee after the early-morning baby routine to see if you have a new column, so I don't feel so out of the loop. Plus, I just renewed for two years, even though I didn't need to, so I could get your book. Oh well, I will miss reading you here at Salon, but I wish you the best of luck. Thank you so much for the past six years!
You were overly obsessed with the iPhone, but you're a pretty good guy.
I agree with the concerns voiced above that Salon may further transform itself into an girls' club. Personally, I doubt they'll succeed in that endeavor, because the women on the staff, from Walsh herself on down, are pretty much the most unhip and out-of-touch women imaginable.
But enjoy Slate. I hear they can pay the bills.
I'll visit you there.
Well, now I can just link directly to Glenn Greenwald. So there's that.
Thanks and good luck.
That your replacement will be yet another Kool Aid sipping zomboid hack from the bowels of Salon's political pundits.
So what do you think of this cell phone, and isn't Obama the messiah?
This column, sports and movies and tv will all be gone by Nov.
I read Slate pretty regularly, too, so see you there!
I don't check out everyone of your posts, but this news and the accompanying feeling of loss tells me that I've become dependent on it nonetheless. Thank you, Farhad for your work here at Salon. You will be greatly missed!
I second those who call on the Salon higher-ups to seek out a tech writer with a fresh, unique viewpoint and style rather than the "kool-aid drinkers". Please buck the trend and get someone with a sense of humor and a lack of pretension to fill Mr. Manjoo's spot!!!
Good luck, Farhad. I've enjoyed your column very much, and I will miss it. You have a refreshing perspective, and you break down complex tech issues so everyone can understand them. Slate is lucky to get you.
We'll miss you Mr. Manjoo
But as for Salon?
It continues to slip.
Farewell Farhad - "khoda hafez" as we say
I hope you found a better publication to work at
With much better pay.
Best regards
I actually registered just to leave this comment: I've really enjoyed your column, Mr. Manjoo, even though I'm not much of a tech head. I might have to start reading Slate again just for your sake.
