    While I'm usually among the first to jump on the pedantic bandwagon when it comes things like this, I'll take the contrary view here and point out that, unless you're talking about birds, common names really aren't designed to be accurate descriptors of a species. Call it a giant squid, call it a colossal squid, call it a humongous squid, it doesn't really matter ... it's a squid and it's big. If you want to be precise about which species you're referring to, stick with the Latin.
