FCC can't stop Diane Keaton's TV F-bomb

A court ruling from last year has prevented the government from fining broadcasters that air "fleeting instances" of profanity.

The letters thread is now closed.

Thanks Farhad

for that kick in the balls!

Thursday, January 17, 2008 02:35 PM

Too damn funny

Its nice to see little victories for the people against leviathan.

Thursday, January 17, 2008 02:52 PM

Thank the gods

I think most people are tired of having their viewing ruled by what Old Maid Martha from the back of beyond thinks is acceptable. From the racket these "concerned" (read: bluenosed) citizens keep making, you'd think the viewing public were all porcelain dolls who can't stand the slightest bit of ickyness.

Except for blood and violence, of course. Those are perfectly fine. In fact, they're downright MURRIKIN!!

Thursday, January 17, 2008 03:27 PM

So if "fuck" is like a sucker-punch...

Then what's actually getting sucker-punched like? Getting fucked?

Thursday, January 17, 2008 04:03 PM

Burka's, American Taliban

What is it with people? They all have sex, or at least their parent's did. But you can't actually talk about it, at least not on TV or radio. Thank god for the internets!

Something I have never understood? Why is perfectly ok for me to say, "sexual intercourse" or "copulation" but not the dreaded "f" word.

A lot of this comes from American Taliban religious freaks who apparently have never read the Song of Solomon, or recall that Adam and Eve were, gasp! Naked! They even fucked each other and had Cain and Abel. Not sure where their "wives" came from though.

In Canada, we really don't give a shit. The Trailer Park Boys are on TV, and no one really cares, well a few people, but fuck them.

What the fuck is the big fucking deal?

I don't fucking see what the fucking problem is. You fucking might be able to censor the fuck outta Diane Sawyer, but you sure as fuck can't censor your kid's 6 year old friends, who fucking curse all the fucking time. Fucking deal with it in a mature fucking way, instead of trying to fucking pretend the word fuck doesn't exist.

Thursday, January 17, 2008 04:20 PM

I love Diana Keaton...

As I teach my kid: words only have the power we give them. So, fuckety, fuck, fuck, fuck! Get over it people.

Thursday, January 17, 2008 04:50 PM

We need more 'fuck'!

Definitely. Say, in the presidential debates.

Garrison Keillor has a whole piece in Salon on what sickeningly polite pantywaists these candidates are. What's required? Why, some 'fuck', of course!

"Madam, with all due respect, your head is waaaaaaay up your fucking ass with that proposal."

"That's such a dumb fucking idea, I'm surprised it didn't come out of Bush's mouth!"

"You really have no fucking idea what you're talking about, do you, Senator?"

I spit Diet Coke all over my keyboard!

Funny stuff! Thanks, Farhad. :-)

While I am all for judicious use of the F-word where effective, I do think it tends to get a little teen-like, tittering (heh, I said tit!) over-use, and that's boring. Farhad's use was perfect. Very effective. Great writing!

Darn it!

This is terrible news. My kids were this close to growing up as moral decent upright citizens, and now this - atrocity - of a decision. My kids will never be the same. There's just no going back from the kind of damage Keaton inflicted on them.

Thursday, January 17, 2008 05:29 PM

fuckin' ay!

I can't think of a group of people who probably need to be "sucker-punched" and even butt-fucked more than the phony asswipes of the PTC. I mean, what a bunch of officious, self-righteous twats...or tools if you prefer. Gotta admit, though, I do like the idea of their pure, germ-free little tykes turning to a life of utter depravity after hearing the word "fuck" on TV. "Cub Scouts on Crack!" "Girl Scouts Gone Wild!" Oh, the possibilities are just too delicious...

Thursday, January 17, 2008 06:41 PM

I feel so bitch-slapped.

I'm sending you my therapy bill.

Thursday, January 17, 2008 06:54 PM

Dear Lord someone bitchslap Diane Keaton

The most annoying person on earth. A Diane Keaton movie makes me want to hold up a gas station.

An alternative view...

Look, I'm no prude, and I swear like a sailor...but it doesn't mean I think I'm very "charming" or "fun."

I mean, it is what it is. It's coarse and crude language and it belongs in it's proper place, in private conversations that don't get overheard by strangers. I agree most people won't be that offended, but it's still rude.

Obviously, the FCC is a big fat fucking joke, and it's absurd to fine anybody anything for one word that slips out on tv - but let's not defend Diane Keaton for it. She's a respected movie actress, and this was classless, not charming - she's copying Nicole Richie, for crying out loud! And Bono was a loser for swearing, too. He's Bono! Does he think swearing will make us extra-special impressed with him?

Just because we can curse, doesn't mean we need to. And please, Keaton won an Academy Award - as if she didn't know she was on TV...

I am deeply wounded

by the Parents Television Council's inability to use an apostrophe. OW!

You Want To Make Out With Diane Sawyer???

If you had said that twenty years ago, I'd be next in line. But now?? Do post-menopausal women really make your bacon???

EEEEEWWWWWWW!!!!

Friday, January 18, 2008 01:41 AM

Them's fightin' words, mcnair!

"he's a respected movie actress, and this was classless, not charming - she's copying Nicole Richie, for crying out loud!"

I've been in love with Diane Keaton since Annie Hall. We're talking 30 years here. Don't you be dissin' Diane!

Diane copies no one. Other people copy Diane. Get it right.

I'm sure Lauren Bacall considered it a high point of her career when she got to say "fuck" on The Sopranos.

Friday, January 18, 2008 08:52 AM

Ok...so they won't get fined

Doesn't mean that those who were offended can't turn off Good Morning America from now on, now does it.

So if those who were offended stop watching, it will cost Good Morning America viewer which in turn will cost ABC advertising dollars. Of course that means nothing to me as I don't watch it anyway...so frankly I could care less what Diane Keaton and Diane Sawyer say on television as I will never hear it.

Friday, January 18, 2008 09:01 AM

You are soooooo not alone

in wanting to make out with Diane Sawyer.

THANK GOD FOR FREE SPEECH!

Stupid censorship is given a major blow to its vanity and ego with the court ruling, and the _UCKING COWARDLY CRUMBS of the FCC(See, I censored myself without their help!) should realize that the "precious impressionable" sons and daughters that these holier-than-thou (full of holes in their head) "family value"(i.e., worthless scum) groups are trying to protect have already picked up many colourful words to add to their vocabulary from their schoolmates and friends without needlessly worrying about their "precious" little ears being sullied by a Keatonian epithet which escaped the censor's scissors!!!!!
