Is Star Simpson's "fake bomb" just an art jacket?

An MIT student wanted to stand out on career day by wearing a jacket that lights up. Airport cops nearly killed her for it.

The letters thread is now closed.

It is not a fake bomb

A fake bomb would look like a real bomb. Ms. Star's star looked nothing like a bomb. A bomb, a real one, would be hidden or disguised. But then why would an airport security official know what a bomb looks like anyway?

It's incredible. This whole airport thing is just stupid anyway. The next attack, false flag or otherwise, will take place somewhere where there is not a lot of security, someplace like a shopping mall or a university.

Get used to it you morons, LED fashion is here and it here to stay.

How will the security robots respond the above?

And finally, is it really a good idea to shoot someone they think is wearing a bomb?

Yeah, man you just gotta make sure it's a head shot! - cheney

Star is Not the First MIT'er Who Got in Trouble

Does anyone else remember Steve Mann?

This happened in Newfoundland in 2002. In their defence it was just a few months after 911 and Steve is a truly weird guy. But hey, ripping out his implants! That's a bit extreme!

Take my advice, take the bus, or better yet, buy a bike, and stop flying. Flying is killing the planet, faster and surer than terrorists! It's true, but hey why worry about hard to understand threat to humanity when you can actually rip out some geeks implants!

On March 14, 2002, Mann received world-wide news attention when The New York Times reported on an incident in which he was detained by security personnel at St. John's International Airport in Newfoundland, Canada while preparing to board an Air Canada flight to Toronto.[11] The article reported that Mann was strip-searched and his electronic implants were forcibly removed, disorienting him sufficiently to necessitate that he use a wheelchair... Mann has claimed that doctors advised him that the separation from his implants (some of which he had lived with for many years) could lead to brain damage - Wikipedia

Sorry - Star is not as bright as they make her out to be

I'm sorry, but this was a boneheaded move on Star's part. Sure, we live in a paranoid society that has been driven insane by Bush administration retoric, but there is still a reality to be dealt with here. Like so many travelers and airport visitors I encounter regularly, Star failed to acknowledge reality and to think before she acted. No excuses, no "MIT students don't do mornings", no "the security overreacted". Simply a complete lack of self-responsibility and acknowledgement of reality. Glad she didn't get hurt, send her home and let's move on.

If You Think This Girl Was 'Asking For It" or "Stupid"

You better pray to whatever evil g_ds you believe in that you don't own a Casio watch!

Drop the watch! Don't move asshole!

MSNBC is reporting that the DHS and the FBI issued a warning to the Transportation Security Administration today stating that al-Qaida may attempt to use watches with cigarette lighters or Casio watches with built-in altimeters to detonate bombs on board US airliners.

"Recent intelligence suggests al-Qaida has expressed interest in obtaining wristwatches with a hidden butane-lighter function and Casio watches with an altimeter function. Casio watches have been extensively used by al-Qaida and associated organizations as timers for improvised explosive devices. The Casio brand is likely chosen due to its worldwide availability and inexpensive price."

career day

I'm still confused that this was her career day outfit. I guess she would stand out - in my day you got dressed up for such things. You didn't necessarily need to wear a full-on business suit, but you'd look pretty unprofessional in a home-made sweatshirt.

shake it off

book smart does not always equal street smart.

if the police feel there might be need to use deadly force and don't actually try to 'disable' the suspect immediately, what good are they? if it were a bomb they and others would most likely be dead.

no one walks into an airport or train station with a bomb strapped to them, walks over to the police/soldiers with the big guns and gives them a chance to take them out. it's a false sense of security.

ugh

Looks a lot like a light-up barrette I used to wear back in college days.

We suck.

Sue the MSM

Simpson should sue the AP and every other news organization's butts for libel. Have you seen anything so preposterous, then the press has the nerve to not even couch it in any sort of "alleged" language?

The MSM has fallen prey to the fear gripping the nimwits in Boston, especially after the ATHF movie promotion. A dozen other cities figured out the ad campaign - what is in Boston's water that they're so idiotic?

I fear the republic is doomed when I read of event like this.

Friday, September 21, 2007 10:32 PM

Yes, it is paranoia. Welcome to Reality, 2007.

Are you idiots going to pretend that this nation hasn't become paranoid?

Furthermore, are you going to say it is WRONG to be paranoid?

Paranoia is part of our lives. It has been since November 22, 1963. There ARE nuts out there who want to kill us. And a goth chick in a flashing-light jacket is far more likely to kill us all in an American airport than a guy wrapped up in a turban and talking about the virgins he's about to get.

If you are so stupid as to make yourself a target - if you don't know what a target looks like - and if you go to the airport assuming that you are not looking like a target - you deserve to be hassled, assaulted and even shot to death just because of your own stupidity.

Little Miss Exhibitionist just got a valuable life lesson. Do you really want to re-learn it yourselves?

hangn_off, Karl Rove loves you

hangn_off, you might want to take some remedial English and logic instruction before begin your next foray into debate. You are the perfect illiterate moron that propaganda-mongering pigs love to see at the ballot box.

Finally!

This article is a breath of fresh air. First rational article I've read about this story. MIT students never cease to be misunderstood.
