Sony tries to clean up the planet (of its products only)

The company will let you drop off your unwanted Sony stuff to be recycled. You'll need to pay a fee to recycle other brands.

Actually, you can send Apple 140lbs

I clicked through the handy link and discovered that the 70 lbs maximum for Apple is per box, and they instruct you to put computer and monitor into different boxes. So instead of a 70lb limit, you can send back that 70lb 21" CRT and the 70lb tower. Now if only Apple provided the same service when you purchase through an Apple authorized reseller....

One Word...

Freecycle

I just bought an Apple laptop to replace an older iBook that had a failing hard drive. Apple only sent me a code to put on my FedEx box when I sent the old laptop back for recycling. Finding a box to pack the old laptop in, filling in the form, and dragging the box down to the FedEx site was my headache (I couldn't call for a pickup).

Enter Freecycle: My wife put out word about the old iBook on Freecycle, and a half dozen people immediately wanted it. They knew about the bad hard drive and the bad screen bezel, but they could replace the hard drive and install Linux. They were happy. I was happy because it saved me from having to repack everything, and the Earth is happy because instead of merely being recycled, it was actually being reused.

Or you can drop it off at the dump where they set aside the electronics

For recycling or whatever for free. Call me cynical but I've always been of the opinion that if the manufacturer wants to recycle my old gear they need to pay ME for that. They're reverse building the gear and salvaging rare earth minerals etc from it and actually making some money. But do I see any of that? No. I should. So until Sony pays me I'll continue to drop off at the dump.
