Not so happy

Hi,

It's not so nice to post the book online, even if it's only photographed... Even if you do download it and read it, please be nice and also buy it - to be fair for the work done by the author.

Regards,

Io

this blog really is shooting low

All the pointless Apple bashing aside that the author loves to gravitate toward- now condoning some torrenting takes Farahad's pedantic 'tech' writings to a new low. Enjoy the bottom feeding buddy.

Harry Potter and the Media Circus

Um, some of you seem not to have noticed that Farhad Manjoo didn't actually post any spoilers. The story (circus?) around the downloading of the book is certainly newsworthy - and has a tech aspect.

Actually, I think it's quite fun - and I'm glad that a *book* is garnering this much attention. Media hype or not, I'm glad to see all this hoopla over a book - and the posting of the book to the web is a symptom of its success.

A lot has been said about the death of reading, and the fact that Harry Potter hasn't stemmed the tide. I don't think that was JK Rowling's intential. I also don't think one book series is enough to do that.

Given the reality that consumer electronics are taking over most of our leisure time (don't believe me - what are you doing right now?), it's far less likely that future books will capture the popular imagination the way that HP has. Much more likely that new gadgets (iPhone) or new software (Vista) will. Bookworms and English majors rejoice - this may be your last hurrah!

On another note...

I was disappointed that in another article, Salon posted spoilers, but at least they warned us so I'll wait until I've read the book before I read Laura Miller's article. Still, I'm old-fashioned enough (i.e., I still read fiction) to hope that Salon could have been respectful enough to wait until midnight tonight to post that article...

The Machinist

Just when my interest in Salon was beginning to flag, something new and without agenda (nothing against agendas per se, but there's virtually no relief from them these days)!

Anyway, most useful and fun.

Thank you.

Brilliant Marketing ploy!

Rowling generates more "buzz", websites and TV that wouldn't normally cover something like a book release are given half an excuse to run yet another Harry Potter free promo! To top it all off, the "leak" is barely legible and would cause anyone who attempts to read it to throw up their hands up in disgust and just go buy the damn thing!

This won't depress sales. This will help sales. Congrats, all of you helped Rowling get a lttle bit richer!

harry potter online book

I have managed to get to the link he was mentioning and it isn't straight forward as everyone thinks it is.

At the end of the day i will still go out and buy the book, i think if you want to read it early why not?

Why are you getting mad at the person in question, all they did was tell people where it could be found. You don't have to go on that site!!

It was doing my head in to be honest waiting til friday so i for one was actively seeking to try and find out what happened. It doesn't mean it wont make the book any less enjoyable for me when i do get it (and i shall still be at Tesco's at 12.01am on Saturday getting my copy)

To the person who is desperate to find the book all you need to do is look on the links and you can find out all you need to know. I would post my email address on here so people if they want to can get the link off me, but i think that might violate tos.

Original?

I suspect that the original posting of this photo edition was in the nntp group alt binaries e-book. It appeared there EARLY yesterday morning, and yes, it included photos of all the pages.

Score another one for the anarchistic denizens of usenet?

Wow.

Huh. Didn't expect Salon to jump on the sleazy ship of the Leaked Potter. Nice work, Farhad.

And zowie, some of the fans using txt-msg-spk for railing against the spoilers, and the one who can't figure out how to get the download (!!!! more exclamation points will surely help you in your plea !!!!)... I would have thought after plowing through all the previous Potter books, their grammar would be a bit more coherent.

(What, you're serious, you say? Why yea Gods! Quickly, to the tech manual for the Internets! All will be revealed to you... but first, bring some Coke and Kung Pow Chicken, then we can talk. Don't forget your binder for the handouts.)
