Don't jog with your iPod in a thunderstorm

Lightning strikes a Vancouver man jogging during a thunderstorm. The burns trace the path of his iPod headphones.

Don't jog near a tree in a thunderstorm!

Surely anyone aware eough to leave the ipod home would just stay home.

Absolutely! And furthermore ...

you probably shouldn't use any kind of headphone or earpiece that is exposed by connection to the lightning. A relative of mine suffered severe hearing loss from a lightning strike somewhere on the telephone land line she was using to make a call.

Trees + Thunderstorms...

....Period. They are a very bad combo. That guy probably would have been fried even if he wasn't wearing headphones and a iPod. I was going to say you were picking on Apple when I remembered, who the hell jogs with a Zune anyway?

Just Darwin at Work

The iPod just puts a new spin on an old story: You're an idiot to go jogging in a thunderstorm, an even bigger idiot to drape yourself in conductive material while doing so.

Don't play the lottery, either!

You might win!

Ugh

The human body is a pretty good conductor of a electricity with or without the iPod. And lightning, well, I mean, 1.21 gigawatt's.

Tree struck by lightning

Farhad, your own report says the tree was struck by lightning and the jogger was passing by at the time.

He would probably have been hit without the iPod.

So what exactly are you blogging about?

Will your next blog be about a lightning rod hit by lightning?

Ipod Experiment

Did the ipod survive?

What about the battery?!

Will the battery now hold a charge for more than a half hour?! If so, I'm leaving my iPod outside next to a big oak tree next time I hear a big storm's coming in...

How about: Don't jog during a thunderstorm!?!

I understand that the injury was exacerbated by the ipod, but why blame the technology for such an obviously stupid move? Didn't they tell this guy in kindergarden to avoid tall objects like trees during a lightningstorm? Why aren't we blaming the tree? -The obvious conductor that brought the lightning to this guy in the 1st place. Why demonize the ipod? It could have been any portable device in the guy's pocket. What about people with hearing aids or pace-makers? Wouldn't they cause an equally serious problem for someone struck by lightning? Collinder-tin foil hats? This guy reminds me of Jim Fixx. -Jogging for his health right into the grave. Why is the cautionary tale the media takes from this about the ipod in all the headlines?
