Proof globalization works

excellent article and a great story about an emerging chinese middle class; a clear sign that globalization works!

As an aside, if chinese consumers want a netbook with more horsepower, Nvidia's ION chips pack a GPU onto an Atom processor. Good stuff.

transient?

One does wonder how much of this is due to the Chinese stimulus package and therefore transient? Is this a cash-for-clunkers type effect?

End game

Whilst there may not be mountains of profits in netbooks, the sheer scale of volume sales in China will produce profits, at least until Chinese consumers are as tapped-out as American ones. The companies who will really make money on this are Chinese retailers.

But if this is how capitalism is to function, then Western firms will have to start dumping their 'patent medicine' approach to industrial products (i.e., the way Big Pharma shuns generics production because it isn't profitable ENOUGH and only works on maximizing profits from patented drugs).

The bad news for those lodging in the top of the capitalist tree is that those profits will be slimmer and those branches in which they have nested may have to be trimmed accordingly.

Welcome to the rest of the world's world!
