Hmm.

Geologists, petrophysicists, land professionals, refinery workers and others...

So no CEOs, regional managers, or other executives, then?

Schemers

Those silly, zany oil industry execs - they just don't realize that the future is now. Aren't they aware that the government-run car companies are only days away from releasing the new zero-carbon go-carts - complete with roof-mounted windmill and Obama bumper sticker? I'm getting mine in green.

Wait, I don't understand...

For years liberals have been telling us that all bad things in the world were the fault of old, white men, and the unrepresentative institutions they controlled.

Isn't the entire idea behind the diversity crusade that brown people and those with ovaries will bring their holistic, representative wisdom to bear in governments/courts/corporations?

And now, you mean to tell us that girls are just as capable of greedily raping the Earth and destroying the atmosphere? That the gender of people involved in an enterprise should count for nothing next to their actions?

What the heck is going on here? Was it opposite day today and I missed it?

Very Mature "Girls"

The mining industry has been doing this for decades. Women in Mining is one of their most potent lobbying organizations. If the oil industry is really only just starting to work this angle then they are a spoiled, pampered lot indeed. Their economic impact is 3 orders of magnitude greater than that of hard rock mining so it may be that this is a new effort -- one they haven't had to make before.

But, if you or your summer interns do some digging, I strongly suspect you will find that this "Gurlz of the Oilpatch" effort is many years in the making. If they bother to read this stunning expose, they will most likely laugh their "broad" asses off, (secure in the access-rich nature of their organizational Rolodexes).

I'm a little tempted to quote a certain line from Ecclesiastes, but I reckon you know which one, so I won't.

women and the fossil fuel industry helping them?

How about Ali Baba, the sheik, and his four wives permitted him by Moslem Law. just kidding?

@Holly; Women in Mining?

"She got the gold mine, and I got the shaft"...

country western lyrics, was it Johnny Paycheck?

Thursday, June 11, 2009 11:14 PM

@aveutter

" was it johnny paycheck" probably , since Gretchen Wilson did not come up with her own, feminists of country version, as

in " I got the gold mine and he got the shaft" [ she could teach HIM just how to drive that lil' old four by four wheeler, you know.]

TV AD

...maybe they can replace that smarmy woman in their TV Ads (she's staring to get annoying).

The oil industry isn't really that interested in the long term

I'm surprised they even bothered to put this much effort into their lobbying strategy.

But your focus on petroleum based cosmetics is a nice blurb. Where would women be without Lipstick?

classic stuff... if not for your column, this website would be a waste.

citation?

"For years liberals have been telling us that all bad things in the world were the fault of old, white men, and the unrepresentative institutions they controlled."

Oh, really? Can you cite a single instance of this? Sure, in your overactive fantasy world there are probably liberals who think things like "Ouch! I stubbed my toe. It's all part of the white paternalistic conspiracy to keep women down." But if you want to make a persuasive argument, you could begin with some kind of shared context--i.e. reality--that might help others understand your point.
