Michele Bachmann: Constitutional scholar

The Minnesota Republican asks Tim Geithner to explain how the U.S. government works. Doesn't he have better things to do with his time?

The letters thread is now closed.

Just make her go away...

The same people who voted for Bush twice didn't learn their lesson and voted for Michele twice and now all Minnesotans pay the price for her rampant stupidity.

What is that woman looking at?

Sometimes, when I see her face, I ask myself "Is that a dream in her eyes?

Tuesday, March 24, 2009 10:25 AM

Promise one thing, do the opposite

then blame someone else.....that is how the American government "works".

Tuesday, March 24, 2009 10:31 AM

Stop pickin on Da Minnesota Floatbrain…

Go Michelle!

You be Da Dunce!

You be Da Dunce!

Tuesday, March 24, 2009 10:32 AM

Congress granted the authority

Quote: "Where in the Constitution is the Treasury given the authority do everything it has done since last March?"

Geithner seemed a bit perplexed. "We operate under the authority given to us by Congress."

Great! Congress gave them the authority. Congress should revoke it. NOW!

When Are They Coming To Take Her Away?

She seriously needs to have the men in white coats put her in straight jacket and put her in a padded cell. How long has she been off her meds?

More Wit and Wisdom from Michele Bachmann....NOT

Bachmann represents much of what is terribly wrong with this country, but what is even scarier are the folks who voted for her. Methinks, we definitely need to improve our schools and send Michele and her supporters back for some remedial studies. She even makes George W. Bush seem half-way intelligent and that's not a compliment by any means. As if Tim Geithner and Ben Bernanke don't have more important things on their plates than to answer to the likes of this moron. Heaven help us all !!

Tuesday, March 24, 2009 10:55 AM

What a maroon!

That's all.

Tuesday, March 24, 2009 10:59 AM

More precision

We also would have accepted pursuant to what is commonly known as the "commerce clause," which gives congress the right to regulate interstate commerce and interstate commerce must surely include the financial system. Of course, many would argue that congress has gone to far with the commerce clause. In the recent Supreme Court case about the federal gov't's ability to enforce federal marijuana laws in California the majority concluded that that power also comes from the commerce clause.

All of that said, Michelle Bachman is an idiot.

Tuesday, March 24, 2009 11:04 AM

One could argue

That the tenth amendment makes this an issue for the states. Of course, that would also apply to about 99% of the things that the Bush administration did, too.

No Child Left Behind, anyone?

Tuesday, March 24, 2009 11:16 AM

Oh, boy.

Where to start?

What a wonder Boehner & Co. have been for the House Minority. How in the world Barney Frank keeps from beating her to death with that gavel is beyond comprehension.

Tuesday, March 24, 2009 11:25 AM

Bachmann apparenlty doesn't have basic reading skills either

"Would you categorically renounce the United States moving away from the dollar and going to a global currency as suggested this morning by China and also by Russia, Mr Secretary?"

No-one ever suggested that the US replace the dollar with a global currency.

There were suggestions that other countries find a way to lessen their reliance on the dollar as a reserve currency

Tuesday, March 24, 2009 11:25 AM

That was funny

She's asking about constitutional law because that's what she knows, unfortunately it doesn't cover economic law. Poor lady, out of her league.

Tuesday, March 24, 2009 11:28 AM

Oh, Please

Please, Jon Stewart: Invite the Hon. Rep. Bachmann to be on your show.

Please.

It would be epic. In every sense of the word.

Tuesday, March 24, 2009 11:29 AM

Michele Bachman - the moron has the mike

What is so telling about her bloviating on everyone's time is her complete disregard for the replies to her "questions". Who elected this person?

Tuesday, March 24, 2009 11:46 AM

Not a lot of people in the world who can make Bernanke look smart

But she manages.

I think what she was trying to get at was the fact that Congress outsourced their Constitutional responsibility to manage our currency to the Federal Reserve Bank. At least that's what I hope she was trying to do, since that would actually be the basis of a good question (albeit one for Congress and not Treasury or the Fed).

Tuesday, March 24, 2009 11:52 AM

minnesota

I am from her district, but believe me, I didn't vote for her. The district has been gerrymandered for all the anti-choice people. Unfortunately, many of us who do not espouse her goofy views suffer the most.

Tuesday, March 24, 2009 11:57 AM

Balder and Dash

What is truly depressing is that her flap and doodle will be held up by righties as Speaking Truth to Power, because since they cannot parse through her questions she must have Hit a Nerve....or some other such conspiratorial crap. It is dangerously stupid.

Personally, the high point for me was when Bernanke had to explain the functioning of the discount window for overnight lending.

Who are the "20 members" of Congress who signed this letter with Rep. Bachmann demanding to know the recepients of funds from overnight lending?

Please - we want to know who the other dumb ones are - anyone found this on the interwebs yet??

Tuesday, March 24, 2009 11:58 AM

what a maroon!

where under the constitution did it allow your hero - george w to spy on american citizens without a warrant? where? under the constitution?

love these repukes that are NOW all about the constitution.

Tuesday, March 24, 2009 11:59 AM

Please

Tell me that she doesn't represent anywhere near Cottonwood County.

Please?

Pretty please?

Pretty Trivial Column = I Hope Something More Substantive Is Coming

That's all you got out of this hearing? A criticism of a Republican congresswoman you don't like? She wasn't the only numbskull on that committee, from the questions I heard. And they all didn't have "R" behind their name, either.

What hard hitting coverage from Salon on this hearing.

Tuesday, March 24, 2009 12:23 PM

How Does This Happen?

She holds two law degrees, so how does it appear that she hasn't taken the time to read the U.S. Constitution?

Two law degrees?

What they say is evidently true: it's much, much better to be born pretty than to be born smart. That would explain her political success.

What an idiot she is, and what hopeless morons are the folks who voted her into office ... twice!

Tuesday, March 24, 2009 12:30 PM

Fladad, so you're OK with her running your life?

Somebody THAT bone-stupid?

Meanwhile, for the persons in this thread who AREN'T sitting at the kiddie table: Cottonwood County is on the other side of the state from Minnesota's Answer to Katherine Harris, in Minnesota's Fighting First: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:MN_Congressional_District_1.gif

Tuesday, March 24, 2009 12:42 PM

Minnesota Wha?

Its inhabitants have a(n ex-)senator who is depriving them of half their constitutionally mandated representation because he can't believe he lost an election (and from the sounds of it won't believe the Supreme Court either when they tell him that). They also have a representative who can't understand that the Constitution gives Congress (her!) authority to make laws governing matters like Treasury Department actions. When did the state that produced Hubert Humphrey and Eugene McCarthy slip the surly bonds of earth?
