"What's the worst that could happen?"
Nothing much, just an increase in the current massive extinction event to include an unintelligent species of primate.
-
"What's the worst that could happen?"
Getting hit by an asteroid.

something like that would be true wherever.
If we drilled in the north, sometimes the snow or lack thereof would hose us. Or in the desert, the rain, well there's your proof mere mortals do not tease the earth mother with impunity. So there. There's always some natural event that messes with pumping a material out of the earth's crust. Earthquakes even. Typhoons, Tsunamis, Godzilla. It's always something.

A major U.S. city disappears beneath the waves.

Drilling in Deep Water
ElectroRobot,
...is different from tar shales or deserts or even Alaska. It is more vulnerable to violent weather. And weather is getting worse over water, especially in the Gulf. It will only get worse, because of that unmentionable thing, GW. Good call, Andrew.
The back side of the peak oil slope looks much different than the front side. And we are definately on the back side.

"What's the worst that could happen?"
The worst that could happen is: McCain could be elected and the US could be blamed for rising sea levels which displaces hundreds of millions of coastal inhabitants around the world.
Fortunately for Reagan, he's too out of his mind to comprehend what he did, both Bush's on the other hand will live to see the results of their legacy, and the hardships that fall upon their grand kids and children.

The Observer has a story that Arctic may be ice-free in summer by 2013
Given last year's record ice melt and this year looking like it might beat it, scientists now predict the Arctic ice will probably melt completely between July and September starting in 2013.
Haven't seen this story picked up in the US at all. Didn't make the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Maybe they didn't get the Jasons report back in the 80s.

In Our Backyard
Are we now paying more attention to global warming because the waves are crashing in our backyards? Do we finally see the economics of continuing our greenhouse gas emissions? Very few tropical storms strike the Indian subcontinent, or reach the shores of China.

Is there a way to say NIMBY in Mandarin?
