His colleagues are making too big a deal about Clinton's gas tax holiday proposal, he says. Where's the solidarity, Paul?

  • Paul Krugman

It is hard not be very disappointed in Paul Krugman. This distinguished scholar turned cheerleader for Hillary Clinton and has simply lost resonance on any issue that affects the Senator from New York. He is in the parlance of the day, "in the tank," and has lost any objectivity. It's very discouraging. He should go back to his ivory tower.

  • Why Paul?

I'm not sure what the hell Krugman is thinking. Does he really buy all that fighter rhetoric from Clinton? When I think of the Clintons doggedly fighting for what you believe in doesn't come to mind.

  • This is the #1 reason I can't support hillary in the primary

I know I have to vote for her if she wins the nomination but I have to be honest, her impulses scare the bejeebers out of me. In this case, Hilary could not afford to change her position on the gas tax holiday for fear of conceding a point to her opponent and appearing wishy washy to the voting public.

But there have been many cases in which I feel that Hillary's first impulse has put her on the wrong side of an issue. The gas tax, the war, net neutrality, censorship. One can argue that she has "come around" on many of these issues, but I'm not looking for a candidate who gets it right the second time. We need a president with better judgment, better instinct than Hillary Clinton can demonstrate. Yes I will vote for her if she wins, but I hope to God that I won't be faced with such a distasteful duty.

  • @ politicod

I, unfortunately, have to agree with you. I very much appreciated Krugman's critical (and correct) criticism of Bush's economic plans and the Iraq War, but his cheerleading for Hillary has been an embarrassment. Not because he supports Hillary, but, rather, because he has ceased to be objective in his support of her and his criticism of Obama.

Psychologically, we human beings are not very good at being objective or fair when we are emotionally invested in something or someone. Nonetheless, I'd hoped for a better effort from Krugman.

  • When Compared to McCain, Voters Trust Clinton More than Obama on Five Key Issues

from Rasmussen Reports......and they are: immigration, health care, balancing the federal budget, negotiating trade agreements, and education.

  • Are you actually disagreeing with him?

Or are you simply peeved that he isn't jumping on the Obama bandwagon? You seem to agree that 1) Clinton is wrong on the economics of this issue and 2) this issue is not as important as it's playing out, which is what Krugman is saying. Yet you criticize him because... as best I can figure, it's becasue this issue is really important because it indicates that Clinton is pandering, and she is a worse panderer than the other candidates, even though they have made a number of significant proposals that will not work as they promised. Obama's health care initiave, for example, is a HUGE pander. There is no question that it will not provide the universal care that he promises it will provide. None whatsoever. This actually seems to be Krugman's biggest problem with Obama. Well, this and the fact that Obama seems blissfully unaware of basic economics.

Clinton may be pandering about the gas tax, but she isn't pretending that it will solve the fuel problems. Whenever she talks about this it is in the context of "This is a very small short term fix, and we need to make major changes in our policies and lifestyles in order to really fix this problem". When has Obama said that? When has he said anything concrete about gas policy?

I am a faithful Krugman reader, and I have never seen Krugman criticize Obama personally. He has criticized some of his policies. He has even criticized some of Cliton's. He has been VERY critical of McCain and the Republican Party. Can we give the "you are with Obama or you are against him" rhetoric a break. It's possible for rational people to agree with Clinton politically even while they recognize that she is a politician. You are a rational person. Please turn the "bad for Obama must be bad for the world" filter off. It doesn't suit you.

  • Our Greatgrand

    Dear Fellow Americans,

Our Great-grand Nation, the United States of America

is and will face very critical and substantial

    "Challenges" in coming,

months, years, and decades to come.

It is very essential that we pick out our next

President on following criteria in mind.

    1. A candidate with "Vision and Mission".

    2. A candidate with " Stable Character and Integrity"

    .

    3. A candidate with "Presidential Temperament" and

    "stable Judgment".

    4. A candidate with "little "Washington" exposure"

    and

    "real connectedness with New Voters".

    5. A candidate who "Inspires us up" rather than

    "Tears us down".

    6. A candidate not based on sexism, racism, and

    ageism.

In my professional and personal opinion, the only

candidate who has the above qualities and

characteristics and is also cool, calm, and collected

    is Senator Obama.

As an independent registered voter since 1980. I voted

for Carter, voted for Reagan, voted for First Bush,

and second Bush in 2000 and In the process last

interest in Washington politics as usual and I

stopped voting. Not a good idea under any circumstance

    particularly at present.

This time we can not afford to stay on side lines and

let Washington stay the same.We can not afford our

Greatgreat Nation to become less than what we are and

    can be.

We need to send clear and candid message to the world

and some 24 hour partisan hateful media. These media

outlets are trying to deprive, dupe, and derail us

from getting it right this time.

They are trying there best to deny us better rather

than bitter future. { Our Greatgrand Nations people

are persistently and constantly subjected to

Psychological terrorism" without their knowledge thru

    these hateful partisan media outlets.

We Americans are should not and would not to allow

    them

psychologically terrorized, traumatized and silence us

    this time.

I am sure that we will get it right this

time and elect Senator Obama our next President. let

us not get dragged down into racism, sexism and

    ageism.

Let us remember that our Greatgrand is constituted of

    family, friends,fellowships, faith, funds,foundation,

fun, and future with fairness and freedom and without

    fear or favor.

We can not afford to lose any of above. Let us stand

up, be counted, save, build our Greatgrand Nation for

centuries to come and regain our world economic, and

    power status back.

God Bless our Great grand Nation and its diverse

    people.

Our Greatgrand nation needs present and future

    stability, security, safety,sustained progress and

restoration of our due status in this perilous Global

    World at the all levels.
