But it's not just the dismal scientists she is disavowing with her charges of oil market manipulation.

@IAB: You are right about Carter vs. Clinton. If you really need to know her guiding political philosophy IMO, you need look no farther than Joe Klein's "Primary Colors" for their MO: as the Clintons saw it, you can do good as President, but you need to be able to be bad to get there. Or, as Travolta puts it: Abe Lincoln had to tell all those chickenshit lies before he could change the world with the Emancipation Proclamation.

@AlecsMom: I never thought of that, but I think you're right. In the mortgage market the lenders are NOT lowering rates when the Fed's cutting the discount, they're just pocketing the difference to cover their margins. Why wouldn't the oil companies do the same with a gas tax holiday?? There's no law saying they have to lower prices at the pump, you know.

  • As serious as a bosnian sniper bullet

What Senator Clinton is saying, combined with the very real possibility that she could become president would scare me if it wasn't for the fact that we all know she's just blowing political smoke.

Does anyone, even the people she's trying to convince think this is a good idea?

I think it is at best symbolic, and at worst a pander, but in the end unlikely to every actually pass a Clinton Whitehouse.

Production drop off is frieghtening, but the eventual bubble burst of this speculative oil boom will be far more disturbing.

Imagine if we get 1.50 gasoline again? So much for those priuses.

But then again, the more SUV's sold the faster we will run out of oil, and the faster we'll have to adjust our lifestyles and livelyhoods.

who knows, we may finally have full employment as professional bicycle generator oporator becomes a great way to earn a buck without a great deal of education.

And then we can fear the day when the bicyclaists union goes on strike.

  • Obama is an idiot.

Telling people that they have to pay more for gas when it's breaking the bank is truly the sign of an ineducable moron. Only to liberal elitists would it even reasonate. The rest of the Dem party learned that lesson when Mondale promised to raise taxes.

Obama should just go back to hanging out with slimey Syrian gangsters and get out of the way.

  • Prices go up quickly, down slowly.

This really is pretty dumb. Anyone who pays the slightest attention knows that gas prices, like credit card rates, tend to go up quickly, down slowly. So, if you cut prices by 5% at the source, it would take months for that to be seen at the pump, and that assumes that there are no other price fluctations - and one or two bombings in Basra could take of that.

And there is also a breathtaking absence of means - how is this to be done ? By Congress ? Is it even in the schedule ? We are running out of time to pass anything serious in an election year - and have any of the leaders of the Congress signed up for this ? Not that I have heard, and without them a passage of anything before the summer just isn't going to happen.

So, we have a bad idea that won't help the people it is supposed to and has no actual prospect of getting enacted and, oh, by the way actually was proposed by Republicans. Is this really the best that she can do ?

  • Repealing the federal gas tax is, as everyone should know, nothing but a cheap election year stunt.

That Clinton thinks she needs to embrace it just shows how desperate she is. This is especially true when you consider that the largest part of the price of oil and, hence, gasoline, is a $.45/gallon import oil tax.

If it were up to me, we'd have an additional $.50/gallon federal gas and diesel tax going exclusively to alternative energy research and mass transit funding.

  • Politics as usual

I was a strong Hillary supporter, but slowly have changed my allegiance. If I hadn't already, this gas tax crap would've been the last straw.

I want a president who respects my elitism .. oops, I mean intelligence.

  • @Shawn

Are you being facetious? Obama isn't telling people they have to pay more at the pump, it's a FACT. Nothing will change that fact but consumer habits. What Obama is not doing is LYING. Are we now at a point where we attack politcians for telling the truth?

As for gas prices, they aren't going back down, gas tax or no. Hint: Obama has nothing to do with it. Taxes have nothing to do with it. Look east, Middle and Far East, and then dip into South Asia. That will give you a head start on seeing what we, globally, are up against.

The truth is that the alleged tax holiday not only won't lower prices at the pump, it will most likely end up in the pockets of oil companies. 12 more billion dollars. What a great strategy!

  • Gas Tax, Another Lie Because Prez. Bush Will Never Sign This into Law!

Since John McCain or Hillary will not be President this summer, how will they be able to Implement a Gas-Tax Holiday into FACT.. they can't! It is a gimmick that they cannot produce on... That is so sad, and another example of Politicians trying to fool people for a vote on an idea or Gift they can't deliver on or produce. It's basically dishonest and a lie! Barack will not make a Phony Promise to the American people!

Media is also disingenuous and complicit in this gas-tax holiday lie and myth! First because they know a President would have to sign off on this and, second because they fail to enquire of Hillary or John, just how they plan to sign this into Law when they in fact will not be President this summer! So,once again the Republican-controlled media fail the people by NOT pointing out the obvious! Failed us as they did with Iraq.

As for the obliteration of Iran remark, we should recall what Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill wrote in position 8 after World War II in The Atlantic Charter, both who knew and were familiar with the horrors of war....

Position "Eighth, they believe that all of the nations of the world, for realistic as well as spiritual reasons must come to the abandonment of the use of force. Since no future peace can be maintained if land, sea or air armaments continue to be employed by nations which threaten, or may threaten, aggression outside of their frontiers, they believe, pending the establishment of a wider and permanent system of general security, that the disarmament of such nations is essential. They will likewise aid and encourage all other practicable measures which will lighten for peace-loving peoples the crushing burden of armaments."

    Frankllin D. Roosevelt

    Winston S. Churchill

    Less we forget!
