The vile state of Internet discourse knows no borders

The online reaction to a Chinese Olympic torch-bearer who dared criticize a boycott of a French supermarket chain? Burn her, stone her, she's a witch!

It isn't surprising that women --

would obeject to being called nasty names --

"I have taken a survey among females of my close acquaintance, and the opinion is that the "c" word is way worse than the "n" word."

I'm sure those white women are personnally experienced enough with being called by both names that they are the ultimate source of objective truth on that point. I will note, though, that there isn't a history in the US of lynching those called "cunt" but not "nigger".

"These days everybody is very careful to not use the n-word."

"Everybody" except those who do use it regularly, and without concern for being "careful".

"There are also many other words that would be equally offensive to blacks of whatever nationality that decent people would not use. That effort needs to be expanded to include the multitude of offensive words about women."

But it's okay for women to call men the equivalent of "cunt"," which is "prick".

It all depends on whose name-calling you -- and I mean you, and your girlfriends -- approve -- "prick" -- and disapprove -- "cunt".

Do yourself and the world a favor: if you and your girlfriends are against name-calling, then stop YOURS.

And the US has "good" reason for its amnesia --

"The Chinese diffference

"Our idea of a long time ago is the last election cycle. The Chinese, or maybe Asian, idea of reciently is if it happened since the invention of the steam engine. I suspect that as the Han get more and more economic muscle and greater world wide connectivity we're going to hear grievances aired that nobody on this side of the Pacific even remembers.

"-- IaintBacchus"

The US's conduct in response to the Boxer Rebellion -- which was comprised of Chinese in China against imperial aggressions and oppressions by Western outsiders.

Same goes for the US's conduct in "liberating" the Philippines from Spain.

Male anger doesn't justify use of hate language

I assume this information would be wasted on the chinese person who wrote that example post used in this piece, but here goes for the sake of the Salon posters.

I have taken a survey among females of my close acquaintance, and the opinion is that the "c" word is way worse than the "n" word. These days everybody is very careful to not use the n-word. There are also many other words that would be equally offensive to blacks of whatever nationality that decent people would not use. That effort needs to be expanded to include the multitude of offensive words about women.

It appears that many men have no idea how bad the c-word is to women. It's not on a par with "bitch" (which is also very offensive no matter how much you hear it flung around.) No man who cares the least bit for any female would use these kinds of words.

Picture the guy you despise the most screaming those words into the face of your daughter, mother, wife, sister, caring teacher, terrific co-worker, whoever means anything to you.

To the extent that those words are used to or about any female, they burden all females.

It is not enough that you not use them in mixed company, you need to decide that you are better than that to keep that kind of hate in your language patterns. Try insulting males you have a problem with without indirectly actually insulting some female.

Dear me, Andrew

As a white(ish) male (formerly) Orthodox Jew I have to say you know jack shit about online abuse. the internet is a mob and places like Salon are the lunch table of people who think they're a lot more indie than they really are. But thank the Fat Lord Baby Che that they have their anger, their hate, their insults, threats and general Internet tough guy-ness. Without that, they'd just be pussies, slackers and losers.
