Obama: The Chinese version

Why is the Democratic candidate for president throwing a net over the logo for China's biggest search engine?

The letters thread is now closed.

Asian racism

If memory serves me well, some years ago some important Japanese elected officials made pretty derogatory remarks about blacks. There is a vast cultural difference between China and Japan. China is a land of many tribes, the Han being the majority, I believe, and though their ethnic differences have been less a problem for them than us, the Japanese are all "One Tribe" and very parochial.

Obama

Sir,

Why Chinese are sponsoring Obama (overseas chinese are given this message). But the ordinary chinese are not being made aware of the tibet protests in London, paris and LA?

Exactly why our country needs someone like Barak Obama.

China may indeed be an oppressive regime with a different political system than ours but it is to our great peril to dismiss them as 'enemy' because of it.

We're in a new world and this country had better get its s**t together or we'll all be speaking Mandarin soon enough. I think he's smart to understand that our future as a country depends of our ability to connect with the Chinese (as much as we can anyway) and for our governments to develop a sense of trust and relationship which benefits us both equally.

I don't begrudge Obama for having the foresight to understand the world we live in, and the world that's coming very soon.

P.S. By the way, how better to change a repressive regime (or any regime) than for the people themselves to demand it? China has changed a lot even in the last 10 years. Isolation never helps those people who want or demand change.

Web or net?

Isn't that "net" in the illustration attached to a computer mouse? Perhaps it's meant to convey something more like "harnessing the power of the web"?

Clarification, please

That sexist screed by Paul of arus above: was it Paul's opinion, or a translation of something on the Baidu page? I'm an Obama supporter, but I'm appalled by the suggestion that Hillary was to blame for Bill Clinton's impeachment because she "refused to kneel".

Nitpick: "Anything is possible" subsumes "He can do anything"

I realize we're talking about the idiomatic meaning here, but if anything were possible, then it would be possible that Obama could do anything.

My point? Maybe nothing, but if English weren't my first language, then I would be hard-pressed to choose one formulation over the other, since both are nonsensical. What does it mean anyway? I guess: don't rule out possibilities that seem very unlikely. It's good to have idioms, but it's also good to know what we really mean.

It also reminds me that a few years ago while in China I saw a large advertisement that said "Impossible is Nothing." I got a chuckle out of the mangled idiom, but now when I look it up, it seems it's an actual Adidas slogan. So anything really is possible.

P.S.: I'm dead serious about megazord. Obama's got the gift.

OK, "do anything" is an exaggeration...

But when "Morphin' Time" comes, I am counting on him to summon the Donkey Megazord.

It's our only hope.

China's search engine

but the real question is how much of the "rest of the internet" does their search engine censor. I'd find it strange that Obama wanted support from repressive regimes.

Obama: The Chinese version

The entire world is watching and waiting the outcome of President-elect B. Obama's political victory in the USA--i.e. reflecting the "consciousness of America cutuzens."

Why? Obama's "inclusiveness" approach to "all inclusive problems/public concerns" of the American people with consideration for those in other countries who are directly impacted by the "situational problems" takes into account-solution impacts on other countries--and those countries have both an active role and active-self interest concern-in the solutions and the implementation thereof. After all, what America does for America has direct impact on its neighbors--who, under the Bush-ism GOP political goals of "Selfish Feed and Greed-damn all others," give no consideration. Why would Irag agree to the demand of Bush's Feed and Greed demand that the USA be given an exclusive-right to all its oil output for the next 50 years? Who, even not in their right mind would agree to theft--under guise of "negotiations." (with a gun at one's head).

Be not deceived- whatsoever a man sowe-'THAT' shall he reap-

Bush & and by extension McCain must go!! Hillary and Billary (the self-proclaimed "Black Man's past impeached president"- discovered the error of his way-by the voters response-choosing Obama over Bill's ole lady (who refused to kneel) to 5-1 vote margin.

Regarding the "female right" [assumed she has the implied right to be the 1st female president of the USA].

That tact does not brew well in more than 90% of other countries--[their histories and cultural standards have 1,000 or more years of "women staying in their place in the family and by exension- in public/political matters.].

Ignoring traditions of others does not attest to one's leadership experiences gained during one's 'time in the white House."

Is it not strange-that "sex" (or the lack thereof between lawfully married husband & wife) is the one item that resulted in the Impeachment of Bill Clinton?

While the entire world watched-and covered their mouths to hide the laughter at such non-issues of importance--by any president-resulting in impeachment--and Hillary was (is?) at fault--

And yes, America is ready for a president who have "inclusive developed resoultions to inclusive problems of the citizenery of this great country" [jobs, climate change, health care, education (not just one test-trickery]

Yes, America is ready for a presidnet who will do what is collective and inclusive of all peoples impacted thereby- in the USA and abroad. Yes, the world is watching America-awaiting its response to "ability-intelligence-honesty and morality" found in Obama (absent in Hillary).

And yes, with Obama as its president- America will again ascend to the position of "world leadership by inclusion of other nations/countries in world problems and concerns." The only candidate who fully understand that any Presidental policy implemented in the USA has direct impact on other countries.

And, YES America is ready for "common decency" in its President and its policies.

Headline

means: "Black kid" Obama- Anything is possible!

Here's my rough translation of a section on the page:

Two years ago, very few people in the world knew of this "Black kid" Obama. But today, this 47 year-old ethnic African, charismatic and bright, has become the most moving American presidential candidate.

In America's online world, Obama has remained an all-time hot topic. The video of Obama's speech in Philadelphia was the most popular video on the Internet.

In the age of the Internet, it does not matter if one is a common civilian, from a metropolis or from a rural area. As long as one is hardworking and tries to fulfill one's dreams, even an ordinary civilian (as Obama once was), can become a presidential candidate.
