Debating NAFTA, with nuance

Even with Tim Russert nipping at their ankles, Obama and Clinton managed to talk some sense about trade

I would be happy...

... if we simply had an administration that doesn't rely on corporations to write our trade policy.

Filtered through the media though

It's kind of hard to tell what Obama thinks. Will he feed the 5000 with 4 loaves and fishes? Or will he wave his Electro-Hopeometer over the problem to make it go away?

socialism!

isn't that what laws are, that aren't drafted to benefit corporate interests?

it's bad enough to be a secret agent of sharia, now he wants to protect wage workers? and he thinks republicans are responsible for establishing alqaeda in iraq?

there must be some disquiet in american chambers of commerce, across the land. to these people i say: "be calm. after the election it will turn out that he's just another politician. we will prevail, just as we did in china. money is master of all."

Nafta On the rocks

No Senator Obama is wrong! The US cannot compete with anybody if

anyone doubts it just look up the statistics for how many of our

jobs have been shifted abroad by the same Multinationals that were the intended beneficiaries of NAFTA in the first place.

Economics Classes in High School?

We need Econ 101 in high school. Just the basic concepts of supply and demand, and an introduction to macroeconomics. It would be interesting, not a hard course. If we had that, American voters might be able to make some judgments.

Americans who complain about NAFTA are pansies

Hey, pansies! You are American. You have survived through decades of economic disappointments and lower expectations, and you have managed to rear your kids, and put some money away, anyway.

Americans work harder than any other nationality. You are American! Maybe you have worked in Europe, and seen how they all go home at 16:15 every day, seen how they call in sick, and never finish projects.

NAFTA did not cause your problems. Where do you live? Did you never see Latin Americans in your state before NAFTA? You must not have been looking.

You, American, are the most productive worker in the universe. It ain't easy, but don't bitch. Just work. And then retire to Latin America or Europe.

I like it when the hippies who claim

they've never owned a television are positively cheerful telling everyone else to pay $10,000 for one built in the USA.

Its Not about NAFTA--Its China

Several years ago, I met a business man from Mexico who had built and started up a factory in Mexico to make headsets. He had hoped to benefit from NAFTA and to provide good jobs for Mexican workers.

Unfortunately, the Chinese undercut his prices with near slave labor and his business was lost.

This story has been told many, many times around the world. I have a partner from S. Africa. He has talked of a business in S. Africa that provided jobs to people with handicaps. The Chinese undercut them too and took the business at near slave wages to China.

I'm hoping that the rising price of oil will put a stop to this madness, because governments are doing nothing.
