Hillary Clinton: The Asian-American choice

Barack Obama may be the "diverse" candidate, but in California, his voters came in just two colors: black and white.

The letters thread is now closed.

Makes sense

As long as we accept the proposition that parsing the racial texture of a candidate's support among the people says something about either the candidate or the likely outcome of the race, support for Clinton among older Latinos and "Asian" voters makes total sense.

On balance, both groups traditionally lean conservative, and some voters could get the heeebie-jeebies if they thought too much about what change supported by Blacks might mean for them.

Many Latinos and Asians are genuinely interested in and supportive of a new direction after the disastrous, careening, mash up of the Bush administration, but they aren't in a hurry to make too many adjustments to the status quo.

The Clinton campaign's attempt to sketch Obama as "the Establishment candidate" today is shameless, and should tell anyone about 85% of all they need to know to make an informed choice.

So, what IS Obama's pitch to Latinos and Asian-Ams?

Does he have one? He's not convincing them--or working-class whites and older voters either--to vote for him. Just bashing Clinton or shouting "change! hope!" into their faces doesn't seem to be doing the trick.

some immigrants are racists

In my own personal experiece many Asians, and immigrants from other places (like Russia), are racists. I've not known many Hispanic racists..I think they just like the Clintons for whatever reasons. Go Obama!

@Ramus1

Huh? I hope there are some strategists in the Obama campaign that have a sharper and clearer grasp of the situation than you do!

Ooooo Goody

I can't wait for the anti Indian Gordon Wagner analogs to weigh in on this one.

Let's not give California so much credit

This is the state that elected the Arnold (the Terminator) Schwarzenegger as their governor after all.

California is not as progressive as some would like to believe.

Diverse? Yes.

Diverse and having a large well informed constituency? No. Well informed voters are the minority.

Cultural Revolution

The bulk of Asian Americans in California are Chinese, not Indian. The Chinese today are naturally adverse to the cult of personality following the chaos of the Cultural Revolution. To many Chinese, Obama's youth rallies and calls of "Change" and "Yes We Can!" remind them of the Red Guards (Little Red Book carrying twenty year olds beating "the establishment").

Well he was running against a Clinton

It's not as if Obama was running against some run-of-the-mill stiff, he was running against a Clinton(s); Hillary would get more votes from Latinos even if she were running against free money.

Also when a black candidate gets 42% of the white vote (to Hillary's 45%)...does that not say something about diversity?

Asians Going White? Wow, Now That's a Shocker...

On my Ivy League campus and on all others I have taught or worked at, every Asian-American on the payroll could be watched over the lunch hour prowling the shrubs and lawns for a White partner.

A few were so pathological in their White Quest, that they were already in their 3 or 4 relationship with a generic White. This was NOT the case with recently arrived Asians from their home country, whose partnership pathology remained within their authentic cultural of preference.

At one campus, White-chasing Asians were so prevalent that it was a running joke among Whites (in their more candid moments), when they weren't spouting diversity double-talk on their way home to their all-white gated communities in Ithaca, Hanover, Cambridge or the Upper West Side. Check out Madison, WI for this freak show.

Add to this "diversity", the Kazillion Korean adoptees being raised as pets in the White suburbs and you have the latest angle on the Hillary's own China Sydrome.

The message of "White is Right" is very clear to Asians in the US. They have swallowed this racist mantra hook, line and mashed potatoes w/gravy.

I NEVER saw an Asian partner (or even associate) with a Black on any level on ANY of the campuses I worked at.

And so Hillary is getting their vote? Oh wow, dude! What's the next expose about? Fat people pulling up to the MacDonald's drive-up?

Japanese Americans were #1 in this pathology, followed by Chinese Americans, followed by Korean Americans, followed by Vietnamese Americans, the Laotian Hmong are quickly pulling up the rear (no pun intended).

@lat2007

So Latinos and Asian-Americans in California are uneducated and reactionary?

Wednesday, February 6, 2008 12:23 PM

Boy the racist attitudes of the Obamabots could not be clearer

than reading some of the comments on this thread. Latinos and Asian-Americans are stupid, reactionary, conservative white supremacists. All hail Obama, the glorious uniter!

Wednesday, February 6, 2008 12:27 PM

why so anonymous?

hey anonymous up there, what you said was blatantly racist and ignorant.

Isn't California The First MINORITY State...

And we expected anything else?

Anyone know the day of the first all-state minority jousts...

...oops, is that the trumpets I hear?

quick grab the mace and run to Barbara's heli-port or Oprah's yacht.

painting with a broad brush

I'm south asian and a strong Obama supporter. I think you will find a lot of support among young asians for Obama. You only have to look to groups like SAFO (South asians for Obama) which is fairly active in the bay area and has reached out to a lot of young voters.

Some of the stereotypes of Asians on this forum is a little troubling and ironic since in trying to categorize asians people have been painting with a fairly broad brush. You will find a lot more diversity in Asian American views on the candidates.

Asian Racism

Asians can be racist too, though I'm glad there were still enough analytic ones to vote for obama.

Wednesday, February 6, 2008 12:43 PM

So who is playing the race card here?

As I expected, the Obama supporters on this thread are now calling anyone who does not support Obama as racists. Just like the ignorant, bigoted 'Anonymous' with that screed of his. And what, pray tell, do you call it when blacks vote in huge numbers for Obama? Just a coincidence? Nothing whatsoever to do with his racial ethnicity?

Does it not occur to you that some Asians (Southeast Asians, South Asians, etc.) may just prefer the genuinely more experienced candidate? As I do?
