  • Such bloviated rhetoric

Wow, such an impressive rhetorical display, replete with base sterotypes and personal observations that mean not a whit. The real culprit is a little bit of a lot of things. Not lack of planning - that's why Lake Lanier was built, for heaven's sake. But it is true that local governments are exacerbating the problem by allowing development on septic tanks, which is a purely consumptive use.

It's not because because we are a bunch of yahoos who have no clue about water conservation - we actually created an organization to look almost solely at that issue. As a region, Atlanta has done a lot more than most in a least paying lip service to conservation. But that's the problem. The organization created doesn't have the teeth to mandate its recommendations, like retrofitting plumbing fixtures on resale of housing. So let's blame Georgia counties' home rule provisions, not the lack of vision to see this as a problem. Or let's blame gutless, spineless politicians who yield to big-monied interests.

Certainly there are enough spineless elected leaders to go around, so let's not make this a southern thing, y'all.

  • An appropriate motto:

As a resident of one of Atlanta's white enclaves, I can tell you that the perfect motto over this example of short-sightedness would be "death before dry lawns"...sounds stupid and fitting of the level of consciousness that abound in the region, it is.

Want another example? How about their new aquarium...they wanted the best one in the world, and if biggest means best they got it, but if you've ever been to Moneterey you will know it's not just about size.
