my brains too fried to flip thru all 33+ pages of the study....but in addition to all of the reasons listed contributing to the advancement of gender equity, one overlooked reason (not addressed in the study) may be the increased prevalence of Christianity. Korea is the most Christian nation in Asia outside of the Philippines, which may temper the male-influence of Confucianism. You don't need male heirs to watch your soul if you're in heaven w/JC.
Unfortunately no definitive way to test this hypothesis....but it would mean that the results in Korea may not be replicated in China and India without some more biblethumping done by locals/missionaires. Dunno, my two cents.
Sincerely, a salon reader visiting korea.
actually christianity is mentioned in the paper, and it is one of the factors that tempers son preference. but the most dramatic change in sex ratios has occurred since 1991...
And these countries are such fine examples of why this sexist crap works too! Wonder why it never caught on in the United States? Oh yeah, that's what Christianity is for here.
What is that about?
abortion has had unintended consequences for women -- fewer women wanted around the world. how nice. and the diversity mantra means we accept and dont criticize. the canadians have had to fight this issue with the indian indians for some time. not surprising. these cultures stink.
