Hug your systems administrator

The last Friday in July is a special day. A day to celebrate those without whom the world as we know it would be one big blue screen error message.

The letters thread is now closed.

I would

But my command of Hindi is limited.

The blackout

How timely! Many firms in downtown San Francisco can hardly have had a better reminder of the importance of sysadmins than they had a couple of days ago when the power went out.

Such vaunted names as Craigslist were down for hours.

On another note, perhaps it will not be long until all movie credits include a section for sysadmins. Pixar has done this for all of their films.

Thanks for reminding me...

I have now sent a message to all 300+ people in my company.

I don't expect much in the way of appreciation, though... Such is the lot of the lonely sysadmin...

and strangle the author of the sysadminday web page

this web page downloads an inordinate amount of garbage onto your PC just for the privilege of reading this page; as a hairy-eared, gray-headed old programmer with 30+ years under his belt, I take umbrage with anyone who dumps garbage onto my PC

Ain't Gonna Happen

The sysadmin is the nameless, faceless geek nobody remembers when things are going well, and the brunt of everyone's hatred when they don't. Even when it's not his fault.

The sysadmin is the idiot that tries to get people to change their passwords and choose good ones for a change. He's the anal bastard who gets upset when your PC propagates viruses to the rest of organization. He's got a bunch of stupid rules about how to set up your PC and software, if you want to be on the company net. He appears to know far too much about what you're doing.

Really, the best a sysadmin can be is invisible. Forget the hugs; these guys no longer expect even a simple "thanks." And you can be sure they probably won't receive any.

Alas..

Our sysadmin is kind of a nitwit, who thinks we are all nitwits!

His name isn't Murphy, but it should be.

I think he's a self-hating sysadmin.

Invisible is best

"Really, the best a sysadmin can be is invisible. Forget the hugs; these guys no longer expect even a simple "thanks." And you can be sure they probably won't receive any."

You hit the nail on the head there. I learned a long time ago to measure success by how many people forget I work with them.

Depends on the company

I would appreciate the "hug your sysadmin" day.

With all the attractive females around, hey why not?

Thanks for the reminder

I forwarded the web site to my husband's office, and they gave him a card, a plant, and... best of all... a gift certificate to thinkgeek.com. Let's hear it for systems administrators!!!

By the way, I seem to see two different versions: "Systems Administrator" and "System Administrator". Which is correct?

"System Administrator" or "Systems Administrator"?

jebldmm: The answer to your question surely depends on how many systems the administrator in question administers!
