my personal favourite:
“Textbooks are Soviet propaganda”
Oh there's just so much in those four little words! He denigrates the notion of learning at the same time as he's taking pot shots at the "evil empire"....oh it's just delicious in its insanity!
my initial reaction was also less than charitable, then I felt guilty about that (stupid Roman Catholic upbringing!) but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that there's not much worse than a man who purports to preach peace when he's really preaching vile, odious hate.
Hopefully Pat "let's assassinate Hugo Chavez" will come out and say Falwell's death is the fault of the ACLU! :)

You gave a red star to that?
Shame on you! Shame on all of you!! Reedtoon's post is nothing less than the worst of revisionist history. I dare you. I dare any of you to find so much as a single written or oral statement by this evil fat man that demonstrated any sincerity or conviction of any belief in a compassionate God, let alone the teachings Jesus.
Make no mistake, Jerry Fallwell was a snake oil salesman who made his wealth ripping of the poor and ignorant of their meager savings while doing his best to obstruct any opportunity or effort to help his "flock." He worked for the wealthy by keeping the poor working class shmoes down and weak. He did so by keeping them distracted through the worst of ploys: racism, homophobia, anti-communism and whatever scapegoat he could identify to keep the people from realizing the real cause of their misery.
This so called "Man of God" made his living off being a scumsucking money begging leech of a man of hypocrisy, immoralism and ugly unvarnished hate. He was the man Martin Luther King, the man Falwell derided often, described as one of those Southerners with their lips "dripping with the hate of segregationism."
You want to reward some spineless coward who has the ultimate gall to say "Oh I disagreed with him at times, but you can't deny he was a man of his convictions."
Go eff yourself!! Adolph Hitler was a man I to disagreed with. And like Falwell, he was definitely a man of his convictions. Like Falwell, he also believed all Jews were sinners condemned to Hell. You want to write a glowing obit on Falwell and how he was such an effing man of his convictions? Fine, but add another one for your other favorite hatemonger; Adolph.
After I'm done dancing on his grave I intend to piss on it. And I plan on getting real pissed before pissing on it so I have a lot to piss upon.
He may be made in the US evil bastard, but he was and always will, be an evil bastard. Salon, show some effing spine and stand up for what you believe in. Nothing good ever came from this horrible son of a bitch and you are even now writing of the damage done by the progeny of his horribly misnamed and other equally misfounded universities.
Die in Hell Falwell.

And there was great rejoicing in Munchkinland.
An enemy of tolerance, common sense and simple human decency is dead. Good riddance. Hope he's enjoying the flames of Hell licking at his ass.

Almost every person who does harm is a "tragic victim..."
>But even people who were directly hurt by him should be able to see him as a tragic victim of his own prejudices.<
The same could be said about Hitler, Stalin, and Idi Amin. They all created tons more victims a lot worse off than themselves, and made the world a lot worse place, which is why they gets no pass from me. At the end of the original TWILIGHT ZONE episode, "Death's-Head Revisited," a dead concentration-camp prisoner observes to the commandant he and his fellow prisoners have sentenced to a lifetime of agonizing insanity, "It's not revenge, it's retribution. It's not vengeance--it's justice. But your final judgement must come from God." I'm only sorry that Falwell didn't get the earthly justice he deserved, his sins were _that_ bad.

I'll let Clarence Darrow say it for me...
"I have never killed a man, but I have read many obituaries with great pleasure."
-
He's in Satan's receiving line
"Chancellor Hitler, so nice to meet you...Hello Emperor Caligula, how are you...Dictator Pol Pot, how do you do..."
I hope he's having fun burning. The only thing that would have made this day any nicer is if they would have found him with his pants down and gay porn next to his body.

You asked for proof in your opening paragraph. I ask for proof of any of these assertions.
I disagreed with much of Falwell's theology, but the hatred and false charges flying around here are too much. You're all lying hatemongers simply making things up. Shame on you.

Good Riddance
He is probably having an honorary dinner with Satan tonight, if you prescribe to the South Park theory of heaven and hell. Please guys, parody this one!
I only hope and pray it comes out that he had a heart attack getting his jollies while engaged in some adulterous act but it probably wasn't anything that juicy. Maybe he was having a apoplectic fit because some parishoner's check bounced......
Either way, he's gone and now the fight begins for control of his media empire. They ain't givin'it to Jesus, that's FOR SURE! Let's see who shows up at the funeral to kiss some christian ass.......

I'm tolerant, not an idiot.
The comments thus far simply prove that the "tolerant," "loving" hypcrites of the Left are every bit the vicious haters they accuse Falwell of being.
No, we just don't miss the vicious hater who made a career out of viciously hating us. That his hate lives on in his misguided minions is, sadly, not a surprise.
Falwell spent his life using lies to take money from people who couldn't afford it to attack others who did him and them no harm. The people who made him rich were as much his victims as the people they hated. Unlike his other victims, though, they are far from innocent. Their desire to sow hate had to exist before Falwell could exploit it.
As for the specious "tolerating the intolerant" argument? You've got to be kidding. You want to hate? I'll tolerate that. You want to stop me from loving? Not going to happen.
We would be hypocrites only if we actually mourned the passing of someone who brought nothing but pain into the world. And you would be a hypocrite if you mourned him in any way that didn't include insulting and attacking others. That is, after all, Falwell's only legacy.
You're all lying hatemongers simply making things up. Shame on you.
And so it goes...
