  • Who needs the federal government anyway?

With NY and California leading the way (and probably many more forward thinking states coming soon) in energy conservation and GHG reduction, maybe we don't need the federal government to do anything at all.

OK, it would be nice if Washington did something meaningful, and in the long run it will be necessary. But, what Spitzer's speech shows is how strong the desire is in at least some parts of the country. If this keeps up, then the federal government will have no choice but to participate.

  • When supply and demand is crap

Reminds me of San Francisco's two-year drought in the '70s when the water company urged efficiency, and, as you might well imagine, boy, were San Franciscans efficient. MUCH less water used. So the water company raised rates.

(During the second year, walking along a Noe Valley street one evening, the fog rolling down off Twin Peaks with unusual aggression, I put up my umbrella. A guy across the street shouted at me, "Hey, you! Put that thing away! We're having a drought!")

    Best,

    Monty

  • We're the ones who need to follow example

"The world will have good examples to follow"? If we're talking about Europe then the world is already much more advanced in terms of energy efficiency. America produces more pollution per head than any other country on the planet. We're the ones who need to get in line, not them.

  • rmnews...

...I agree wrt following Europe's example - in some ways. For example, they're far ahead of us in gas mileage. However, in order to get this country off its collective asses (and I do mean that literally), we're going to have to hit our citizens in the pocketbook. I'd be willing to bet the reason European cars get such better mileage is they're paying nearly twice what the US does for refined gasoline. If we were to raise the cost of electricity and gasoline, as well as heating oil and natural gas, to the same rates, we'd see our energy efficiency rise in a hurry. Conversely, if we can prove to our citizens that preemptively increasing energy efficiency (before costs spiral out of control) will result in a significant savings for all, these sorts of measures will pass through the legislative process like a green streak.

Meanwhile, I'm proud of our governor for putting forth these proposals and hope the rest of the states see fit to follow suit.

  • Hahahahahaha!

...Eliot Spitzer proposing wind and solar power as an answer to New York's energy needs... Gimme a freakin' break! Geddouddahere!

I am surprised he isn't asking Gene Roddenberry for a schematic on how to build fusion power with dilithium crystals.

Someboady wake me when Eliot Spitzer says that New York needs 3 new nuclear power plants. Then you might have my attention.

  • Personal Virtue?

Perhaps, Mr. Vice President, we could try to inject some virtue into Republican policy?

  • Climate criminals

I wonder how far out we'll put the statute of limitations

    on these awful people.

One would, for example, certainly want to apprehend Cheney

before he croaks of say, some smoking-related affliction..

Oh, but some of those are terrible things in themselves

    to endure, so....?...

    [Slippery-slope here, guy...best be off.]

  • smart guy

Spitzer's no fool, and lets hope lots of other politicians figure it out too: when you want people to think you're on the right track, quote Deadeye Dick Cheney saying the opposite.

  • Mr. Elephantman...

You do know that Gene Roddenberry is dead right?

Also, everyone knows dilithium crystals help facilitate a matter/anti-matter reaction to create energy... nothing to do with fission. Sheesh.

  • RE: Mr. Elephanman

... or fusion as you specified in your letter. :P

  • Chenergy Task Force

This is the congressional inquest i've been waiting for the longest: What the hell went on in Cheney's closed-door 'Energy Task-Force' of Industry Lobbyists? I know there's a long list of past-due oversight inquiries, but I would love to see this one bumped to the top.

    Greedy bastards.
