I seem to remember reading or hearing that lots of bee colonies are being wiped out by some sort of parasite for which there is no therapy or cure.
But it does make you realize how fragile the whole system is and how many parts have to work in order for things to happen the way we need them to.
I doubt it's the queen bee, living high on the hog like she does, having all of her needs fulfilled by the subservient workers. I bet the Internet has clued the worker bees in to their highly oppressive working conditions, and they are starting to conduct wildcat strikes.
... if the housing bust busted and the real big story of 2007 turned out to be the mystery of the missing bees. In all honesty, the bee situation worries me more than the housing problems. Recessions are not good things, but when I think of what an actual loss of bees would mean to agriculture, even the worst recession pales in comparison. Let's hope this is a temporary downturn in bee populations, not a trend.
