The Value of Twitter Followers: Quality Over Quantity

Twitter followers have become the status symbol of 2009, but how valuable are they, really? I think we’re placing too much importance on the numbers and paying far too little attention to the actual reasons why followers can be valuable to us.

Middle Ground

No question, followers who have no interest in what you are saying are wasted electrons in the internet. But following many people you don't know is a valid approach -- so long as you have a reason. There are twitter directories that list twitterers by interest, where you can find people who share your interests. Follow them by all means, because that is the only way they are ever going to find out about you. Occasionally you have to delete some of them, because of Twitter's ratio rules, but you can be selective, and erase the marginally interesting ones, or the ones who only send out meaningless tweets or tweets about how to increase your followers. Semi-automation is a time-saver, and a valuable tool.

I hope anyone who reads this follows me, if only to let me know you are out there and may have some communication worth receiving.
