How about giving a shit about how much energy it takes to run your new TV? If all you have to talk about is price, re-sale value and size, then you are useless.
There is a third option, of course. If you don't want to spend a ridiculous amount of money for a 60" or larger hdtv, yet you have the space and viewing distance to accommodate such a large tv, a digital rear projection tv is the way to go. DLP (digital light processing) basically means that it is a digital projector in a tv-shaped enclosure.
They have gotten exceptionally thin over the last few years, and my 60" DLP HDTV is regularly mistaken for an LCD TV. You can actually find a 70+" DLP HDTV for close to $2000. You cannot find a similarly sized LCD HDTV for anywhere near that amount. Once manufacturers start flooding the market with >52" LCD panels, I will probably switch over to LCD for the power savings, but right now rear projection is the best solution for my 12' viewing distance from the couch.
The only downside is that, as with digital projectors, you must change the bulb at some point in the future, and the bulbs use lots more energy than the light source in a LCD HDTV. Mine's been going for about 6 years, however. I recently took it out and cleaned the dust off of it, and it still appears to be going strong.
