Mobile Computing Is Killing the Desktop PC

The impact of declining desktop and laptop demand on the PC industry became that much clearer this morning, as Microsoft reported lower-then-expected second-quarter earnings driven, in part, by a deterioration of its client PC business (sever software sales are flat) and said it would cut 5,000 jobs. The crappy economy is kicking the desktop PC industry while it’s down. The desktop has been suffering ever since laptops and accessible wireless connectivity started making mobile computing productive; even laptops are seeing their fortunes fall as low-cost netbooks gain an audience.

Netbooks are a fad

Like tablet computing. Eventually people learn what stupid faddish ideas they are. They go back to the maximum function form factor. A $400 netobook with an Atom processor and a whopping 8GB of SSD is a waste of money. You can buy a 1 year old refurb laptop with real function for the same price.

PC's still have one advantage, size

My wife and I have been going for several years with laptops that have tiny, little screens and a keyboard where you have to hit exactly in the center of the key to avoid hitting the key alongside, too. Then about two weeks ago we bought a PC (IMac) with a huge screen and boy, does it make a difference!! But we still have a keyboard similar to a laptop that is a pain.
