Some hope from mid-country
Do not disrespect Michigan in opposition to offshore oil rigs. We have oil in West Michigan. There are people who would put oil rigs in Lake Michigan. And we hate that idea. Many of us remember when tankers used to spill oil in Lake Michigan, with nasty results.
And Michigan is a huntin'+fishin' outdoors state. This issue plays well here. McCain's offshore drilling thing will fall as flat as Obama's elementary-school-level ideas about the auto industry.
So it's even now. We are open to inspiration.

Perhaps the last choice
If the fear of change overcomes the willingness of the US citizens to vote for change, it will still be forced on them; just more expensively, as Andrew says, and catastrophically as well. Even if Obama garners the necessary support to gain the White House with a compliant Congress in tow, it is unlikely that Americans who supported Cheyney's "Our lifestyle is non-negotiable" and "Conservation may be a private virtue" attitudes will go along with the changes quietly or without violent reaction.

Oil and Obama
Any proposal of Obama's raises taxes. Does it matter whether we pay for it at the pump or out of my paycheck. It's money I don't get to keep. At least I get gas to drive my car when I line the pocket of oil companies. The more money I give the greedy people in Washington (Dem's or Rep's) is less money in my pocket and less control I have in my life. Even if I don't have complete control over industry - I have even less control over government. Any power we endow them with - is NEVER given back. At least I can boycott industry!

Try Balance
Increasing supply, refining capacity, distribution for the long haul while we look for alternative means will no stop us from using alternative means when and if they should become available. However, not having these things in abundance will stop us cold if alternative means is found in due time.
Research and proof-of-concept for alternative means should be built into the same legislation that builds the hydrocarbon capacity - hand-in-hand. When the alternative means are mature enough to use, the economic incentives should encourage transition.

"news"?
Andrew, Is this a "news" story or an editorial?

Be specific, trolls!
In the past couple weeks, trolls are after Andrew Leonard. Usually, Andrew has attracted good posters who have provided great specific info,
But suddenly we have this person tonight (for example) who says Obama will "raise taxes." Baloney. A good poster would tell us what taxes, and how much. Begone, ding-dong! I do not believe you. Nobody here will give you heed.
And please do not just post back saying I am a jerk. I will stipulate, if you wish. (Do you even know what that means?) Please give specific facts, or please slink away.

Change
I do not fear change - I just like the know the type of change I am in for - beforehand - he hasn't made that real clear - except that it will involve more government intervention and me paying more taxes. No thanks - I don't need that type of change.
His whole CHANGE premises is based on the assumption that America is broken - American isn't broken. The jerks in Washington have always been broken and it is our own darn fault that we keep electing them. But America is good and I am darn proud to say I am from America and part of the American dream. I proudly wave my flag and would happily wear a lapel pin that indicates my patriotism. I have ALWAYS been PROUD of the American way and the good we do in the world. Sure, we aren't perfect - no one country is - but you would be hard pressed to find any better place to live in this world and I am sick of all the people who want to "change" it and make it more like a socialist country or worse yet - one step closer to a communist (communal) state. That model has never produced happy and productive people. This model does. Sure there are those who still haven't figured out how to do it - but it isn't because the opportunity isn't there - it is because they haven't figured it out. Let's spend more time helping people figure out how to succeed within our great country rather than changing it so that no one succeeds. Under Obama we are all equally mediocre!

Drilling distracts from Peak Oil catastrophe
Andrew Leonard is insightful. Even the optimistic Energy Information Agency indicates that offshore drilling will help very little:

And Peak Oil is a catastrophe that will impacts us soon:

Be Specific
I don't see anything specific in your rantings! Be specific about how he will implement all his CHANGE without raising taxes. That would interest me :-)

Why liberals will bring down the USA
The leftist liberals and environmentalists have been blocking the use of USA oil for decades. One of the first things they and the media ignore about using American oil is that the money we currently spend for oil from Russia, Iran, Venezuela, and other unfriendly countries is being used to build up the military forces of our enemies, so they can more easily push us around or defeat us. The money we spend on American oil stays here and helps our economy. Drilling here adds jobs for Americans. Drilling here makes our country less vulnerable to some tin horn dictator shutting our economy down. Our trade deficit would be much lower if all our oil came from our own country. Most everyone wants to see a good safe replacement for oil as a fuel, but it will not happen for at least a decade. Remote drilling for oil in the USA may take a number of years to come on line, but drill near other oil infrastructure could bring new oil within a couple years. As far as John McCain changing his mind about drill off shore, when the facts change any smart person changes to meet those facts. The fact is now we must have that oil or our country may fall. Only an idiot would not use our own oil when there is a world wide shortage of it.
