Going mobile

With his usual rock 'n' roll swagger, Steve Jobs introduced Apple's new iPhone. But is the $500 phone more than another cell job?

kstone, thanks for keeping it civil

Believe me, I am not an Apple fanboy. I threw away an iPod rather than navigate their snooty 'genius bar' scheduling for service, even though the iPod was under warranty.

They tried to sell me a $99 service contract on a $99 iPod shuffle so I could move to the 'front of the line'. I didn't drink that glass of Kool-Aid.

Apple definitely has issues with manufacturing quality control - it will be interesting to see how durable an iPhone is the fifth time it is dropped onto a hardwood floor - and how this will be rectified for the customer if it breaks.

I've waited in the queue for service at CompUSA, Circuit City, Apple, Cingular, Sprint and Verizon. I'd rather have a root canal.

I accept the fact the the cellphone market is totally brutal with rapacious players possessing deep pockets and strong relationships with service providers.

I also feel it is a certainty that Appple will sell every single iPhone it ever manufactures at whatever price point they choose.

We have not even addressed the potential impact of portable VoIP WiFi telephony on the current industry paradigm.

My excitement stems from the potential derived from applying the user interface exhibited in the iPhone to other electronic consumer products.

I appreciate the civility of your responses, and I apologize if any of my ranting seemed rabid or personally directed.
