So The Pilot has spoken, and the official story is True. Well, except for a few little points he would like cleared up.
He did allow that a complete refutation of all the theory's is outside the scope of a brief article and on that point I would agree.
Of course some of those omissions are pretty hard to explain away, and some, as he said, are outside his area of expertise.
I was one of those nuts who has asked him a few questions, like, is it possible to make cell phone calls at altitude? Yes, "we catch them in the toilet all the time". I also asked him about Hanjours magic carpet ride and got the truth that it "might not be as hard as you think". I have to bow to his superiour knowledge there, but Jesus, I would still have to put it in the hmmm, I don't know about that category.
His idea that there are sites out there that are essentially "disinformation" sites, run by god knows who, which seem designed to obfuscate, and discredit by associations hardly his, but hey, he's a Pilot. Lumping in obvious nuts with somewhat less obvious nuts, (like engineers, physicists and the like) is hardly a way to the truth Patrick.
There are many many more good questions Patrick in addition to your very good one about missing video tape. Where were the interceptors? Why did not 1, not 2, but 3 buildings collapse from fire that day, for the first and to date only time in history? Was "Project Northwoods" which would have involved switching planes and terrorist attacks inside the US "sci-fi"?
I don't want to read yet another haughty, if not snotty, Popular Science type debunking Patrick. The question of what happened that day has most assuredly not been answered. The story as told by the 911 commission is highly implausible on more counts than I can go into here. What really happened that day is perhaps the most serious question facing America today, for it laid the groundwork for a PNAC coup, that continues to this day. A conspiracy is just a plan, a secret plan. Does anyone reading this seriously think that governments do not make plans and that some of these plans are secret? With any crime we look for motive an opportunity. Lots of people had motive but few, if any had the opportunity. Bin Laden did not shut down NORAD that day.
The truth is out there.
Mr. Smith, I have always been impressed with your rational explanations of potentially hysterical aspects of air travel.
I was in Leesburg, Virginia on September 11th, and remember well the progression of events that morning as I watched in the customer lounge of an auto dealer’s repair shop.
The Pentagon crash was filmed by a security camera across the street from the impact. This was immediately confiscated and has never been released.
If the government wanted to clear this up they could release this video.
I cannot help but think that we have not yet been told the entire truth about what happened on September 11th
After all, we have not even been told the entire truth about John Kennedy’s assassination.
I'll start off by saying that I was one of the millions of immediate victims of 9/11 as I was living in New York City and working near ground zero in Lower Manhattan at the time.
I don't think the attacks themselves are in any way connected to any conspiracy by the Bush administration. It would have taken the cooperation of hundreds if not thousands of people and given the amount of destruction, the number of lives lost, and the blatant power grabs and attacks on our civil liberties since, I'm certain someone involved would have come forward and exposed it.
I do however believe the Bush administration was aware hijackings were planned and prepared for a much different scenario than the one that actually played out. They weren't sure of the exact timing but the fact higher level government officials like the Ashcroft stopped taking commercial flights shortly before indicates they knew something was going to happen.
Instead of the hostage scenario they planned on, thousands of people were killed. They couldn't admit what actually happened because it would have been political suicide for a president with already dropping poll numbers, so they made lemondade instead and they've been using it ever since.
It amazes me that people believe the government could pull off something so dramatic and involved as the 9/11 attacks. This is the same government that was caught off guard as a hurricane took days to make it's way over the Gulf of Mexico and slam into New Orleans.
It is even more stunning that people believe our government could keep it SECRET for five years. The same government that was unable to squelch details on who leaked Valerie Plame's name, NSA wiretappings, and the gathering of domestic phone records... just to name some of the more recent fiascos.
But, maybe it's just me. I confess, I believe Neil Armstrong did walk on the moon.

This argument from incredulity is really wearing thin. Instead of going "hmmmm", pop over to ITVV and pick up one of their excellent in-flight airliner videos. Watch it a couple of times. Pay close attention to the description of the relevant autopilot modes, especially LNAV and VNAV. Also note the procedure for inserting a waypoint into the flight plan. Visit any FBO, pick up the latest IFR Enroute High Altitude maps, and jot down the NAVAIDS nearest your targets.
You now have enough information to be a 9/11 hijacker. And no, I'm not revealing arcane secrets: millions of people know all about this stuff. (Most don't wear tinfoil beanies, though.)
As for all that blather about "3 buildings" and other nonsense, go find yourself an "ask the civil engineer" column.
Much of the initial coverage about Fort Hood turned out to be wrong. Is there anything wrong with that?
