I think just the utter randomness of taking an Olympic sport and saying, "Hey, what if we did the same thing, only at the beach?" is enough to prove how pointless it is. And why not other beach sports? There's already a 5 v 5 international beach soccer league. Why is that hybrid not in the Olympics? (As many previous commenters pointed out, I think the lack of skimpy outfits might be the main culprit.)
Personally, I'd tune in for beach basketball. Or the beach 100m sprint. Now THAT would take athleticism!
