NCAA Tournament, Day 1 -- live!

If you want to understand America, you don't have to watch all this basketball. But it helps.

The letters thread is now closed.

number 6

whaddya got against the number 6?

I am going to say I like Lousiville but not enough to predict they will win it all, I am going with Washington...on the theory that anyone can take the number one seeds and most do, but it takes cojones to pick a number 4.

Down on the Big Ten

King,

It looks like you are, as usual, down on the Big 10 this year. That's often a good strategy, but I think this year the Big 10 seeds are a little more realistic than usual, so I would be surprised if they don't pull as many upsets as they are subjected to.

Personally, I couldn't restrain my impulse to pick most of my upsets against Pac-10 teams. It is bad to have obvious tells, but I rarely watch Pac-10 teams on TV, so I tend to underestimate them.

Not again!!

King - I was a daily, addicted reader to your sports column and miss it each and every day.

Given that, it is even more painful to have you trot out the bogus productivity study for, what, the 10th consecutive year? We get to read so little of you these days that when you do write please give us something worthwhile!

Wager Advice

After moving from the Pacific Coast to the 3rd coast (Michigan) and now Davidson, NC I've had it with Big East this and ACC that; like these are the only 2 decent conferences. So my blabby mouthed buddy from Connecticut was overloading again and I made a bet: He gets all 7 big east schools. I get all Pac 10 and Big 10 schools (13) plus Gonzaga. He gets 1 point per win, I get 1/2 point per win. At the end of the tournament we tally up and most points wins. The wager involves a malted beverage of the winner's choice. Should I start chilling my mug or warming his?

ps - He will rue the day when my fighting Banana Slugs hammer his U. Conn Huskies...time is on our side.

Speaking of connections

My kids used to go to the same North Shore dentist as Mr. Christmas' kids. They got clean teeth and I learned about "Mr. Pin the Penguin Detective", the author of which turns out to live about half a mile from me. Kevin Bacon may fit in there somewhere, too, but I don't know how.

Say It Isn't So!

You picked Dayton over WVU??? How dare you curse my beloved Flyers!

Tourny

Ohio State over Louisville.

Xavier falls to FSU.

Pitt over UConn final.

Hansborough should enjoy himself the next couple of weeks. This will be the end of him dominating basketball games.

Matadors!

As someone who went to CSUN for two full semesters (during my "Go to film school and become a famous director" phase), I also claim them as my alma mater! Go Matadors! (despite the absolute destruction this would wreck upon my bracket)

Use the blog, King

Hey King, why don't you make full use of your blogginess and just make every update a new post. Not a big deal, but it would make the updates stand out a bit more.

Though I suppose that it would blow the letters threads apart. Ah well.

@crumley

Hey King, why don't you make full use of your blogginess and just make every update a new p

For production reasons, it would be prohibitively difficult.

basketball? meh.

In other, far more interesting news, the all-time career wins record for NHL goalies fell this week.

If that doesn't mean much to you, think NFL rushing yards or touchdown passes, pitching wins or homeruns.

Martin Brodeur, who has spent his entire 16-year career with the New Jersey Devils, has three Stanley Cups and an Olympic gold medal for Canada to his name. But goalies play to win games, and has won more than any other goalie in NHL history.

And he plans to play another three years, at least.

Go Bears!

CBS Sports on demand service is pretty stylish this year. At least at this point, I'm enjoying features like the stats bar and boss button more than the uninspired Cal-Maryland game.

What kind of "live" blog is this?

I claim false advertising! Where are the updates?! :)

The WBC is GREAT FUN to watch and

The playoffs are coming up in a few weeks and, although I'm a lifelong Blackhawks fan, I see them as one series and out.

I hope the white Sox win the central again.

Well, that takes care of the sports events that are important.
