They're playing a title game where?

In Phoenix. Phoenix! And the Eagles are there too. It's nuts. The Ravens-Steelers slugfest in the AFC makes more sense.

The letters thread is now closed.

As a Lions fan I demand respect

Hah just kidding. I'm actually writing to say dividing by zero is undefined, not infinity percent. Just trying to keep the standards higher when I can. I feel small okay?

Eagles are the real deal

Before you can say "Ask the Lions", I am quickly putting it out there, Eagles are the real deal. And I'd hate to see Cards in the bowl game because they will get crushed by Steelers or Ravens... NOw Eagles have the meanness and the wizardry on the defense to keep it even.

I am still not convinced that Falcons and Panthers simply underestimated the Cards D. I am sure Eagles are not doing anything like that.

Its been a darn dull NFL season, I hate defense happy grunt fests and this whole season has been one long celebration of the Titans. Glad to see them out. Would have been gladder to see Pats make it to playoffs instead of (uggghhh) Miami.

Santonio

I am tired of the rehash of the winning touchdown against the Ravens. To be accurate, the Ravens did not exactly come "within a sixteenth of an inch of winning that game", but within a sixteenth of an inch of forcing 4th down and a sixteenth of an inch for the winning touchdown. What would you calculate the odds of gaining that distance on a QB sneak, even against the Ravens?

Keystone Bowl?

As a Pittsburgher, I'm completely pumped for the idea of an all-Pennsylvania Keystone state bowl (hopefully sponsored by Keystone Ice, or perhaps Amish Furniture Outfitters). Two questions though:

  • 1. Has there ever been a single-state-superbowl before?
  • 2. Do we really have to go to Tampa for that? Penn state seats 100k, and a game held there would really mark a superbowl that actually breaks the mold, and has a better story line that actually differs from the past 40+".

Probability silliness

Re: winning 3 games against the same team in 1 year. Yes, statistically, it is hard to beat the same team 3 times in a row. But the question here is not simply whether Pittsburgh can beat Baltimore 3 times, it's can the beat them three times having already won two. This is an irritating example of the Gambler's Fallacy, that looks at past patterns and tries to make future decisions made on them when the past patterns have no effect on the future, like when you flip a coin 5 times and get heads each time, and therefore decide the odds for heads next time is really low because hey, 6 heads in a row is really unlikely, right? Nope - the odds for heads is still just 50/50, just like every flip before. People screwing up probabilities like this makes me a sad panda.

As long as we're correcting people's math, I'd add that your statement is true for all values except for zero. Zero divided by zero is not undefined, it's indeterminate.

Niners vs Chargers comes to mind. Also Scott Norwood and the Bills vs the Giants.

1. The two I can think of were Giants v. Bills in 90 and 49ers v. Chargers in 94.

2. State College in January?!...eeww..too cold

Go Ravens!!

while we're correcting...

Can we stop the phrase Frozen Tundra?

per Wiki: The word "tundra" usually refers only to the areas where the subsoil is permafrost, or permanently frozen soil

Tundra is frozen.

Frozen Tundra is redundant.

I wish you would have picked the Ravens.

Our mayor is indicted and we've had 14 murders already in 2009. We need some freakin cheering up. :) Go Ravens!!

Eli Manning would like to help you answer that question.

Eagles 33

Cards 20

No-brainer pick

and while the Ravens have the genius of Ed Reed in their defensive backfield, I'll take the Steelers to be a little better again.

C'mon, King, that's a no-brainer. With the key injuries sustained by the Ravens in the Tennessee game the chances of them winning are slim and none. First, losing their No. 1 tackler (Suggs) to a shoulder sprain, and Samari Rolle (top D-back) to a groin injury. Their top RB Lerond McClain also went down and will not likely suit up.

With those losses they will simply not be able to best a well-rested and revved up Steelers' team playing in their home park.

Much as I'd like to see purple prevail, Steelers 19 Ravens 3.

Super Avian Bowl

Why hasn't anyone cried "fowl"? 3 of the 4 mascots are birds: What are the chances of that? Pity an Eagle will get tossed out as Obama steps in: Raven - Cardinal super bowl, baby! After 8 years of Bush/Cheney we need a Phoenix to get us out of these ashes! Go Birds!

Friday, January 16, 2009 09:39 AM

A minor quibble

The NFL actually adopted its 16-game schedule in 1978 rather than 1977. Otherwise, great column.

Super Avian Bowl?

Actually, if the Ravens prevail (which I doubt, as I noted) and face either of the NFC teams, I will call the SB, "the BIRD BOWL"!

Friday, January 16, 2009 11:30 AM

2 great games this Sunday

I live in Phoenix and grew up near Pittsburgh, but that's not why I'm picking the Cardinals and Steelers to prevail. I think the Cards on a big roll, and I agree with the previous message that the Ravens have a slew of injuries. Then again, Polamalu is hurting as well, and Boldin has a bad hammy that I think will sideline him somewhat.

Mostly I'd like to see Cardinals-Steelers because I think the Steelers would have an easier time in the Super Bowl than against the Iggles.

While were on the topic of football ...

... what could the Chargers do to almost guarantee their first championship next year?

Fire Turner, hire Shanahan, and pay Rivera whatever it takes to keep him in charge of the D.

Think about it: Turner, like Wade Phillips, has a long track record as head coach of 3 teams, and all those teams have underperformed their talent. If Rivera doesn't take over the D in mid-season they don't get to 8-8. Their offense is pretty good yes, but not up to the potential given the talent.

Shanahan, OTOH, is an outstanding offensive coach but a mediocre draft picker. His offensive coaching is such that he makes even average offensive players look great, and he gives the true greats the best opportunities they could hope for. Put him in charge of the current SD offensive talent, which is far better than anything he had at Denver since the loss of Elway and Davis, and they'll terrorize the league.

It's too bad that Pat Bowlen couldn't keep Shanahan but strip him of the GM duties, like they did to Holmgren in Seattle as a prelude to his super bowl with the Seahawks, but ego-wise that just wouldn't work. So, SD has a tremendous opportunity.

Somehow, given their recent coach-hiring decisions, I don't think they'll do it.
