More, Less, or "on Par" with a punter?
That's the question for the day, isn't it?
I'd like to speak in defense of the poster who compared WRs "on par" to punters and the rather mean and dismissive attitude about his perceived football knowledge. Although probably engaging in hyperbole to make point, there is an inherent truth to what he said about the WR position in general. Obviously Owens is a bit more than an average WR, but lets just engage the arguement on the basis of how the average football play operates and each positions' average importance on completion of said play (or in the case of Defense, stoppeage of the opponents play). Remember: about 46% of offensive plays in the NFL are running plays that a receiver would have little or nothing to do with (short of acting as a decoy for about 2 seconds or blocking for the runner – if the runner gets that far) and most passing plays involve at least 2 other receivers and, in some cases, the RB as a legal receiving option as well.
More important than a WR category (in no particular order of importance - THAT would be a LONG debate):
Quarterback, Half Back (Running Back), Fullback, the entire Offensive line (tackles, guards and center), the entire Defensive line (for the sake of argument lets just say this includes the Linebackers as well as Ends, Tackles, and Nose Guard)
Even importantance with a WR category Tight Ends, all defensive backs, Placekicker, Holder, Returner
Less important than a WR category all other special teams players (including Punter, Long Snapper, and all those other dudes running around like crazy)
Anybody disagree? I'd love to read your arguement...
