Coach

Afraid he'd blow it, my ex-husband didn't want to coach our daughter. He changed his mind -- and we all won.

The letters thread is now closed.

Coach...

...is a very good read. As the father of two daughters (one of whom plays middle school basketball and played on a coed rec team for two years--her male teammates tried their mightiest not to pass the ball to her), I can attest to much of what Ms. Straight has written. While reading this piece, a pleasant thought came to mind: isn't Title IX wonderful! That America's female athletes are scrapping and fighting on basketball courts, softball fields, soccer fields and just about everywhere their male counterparts are...I say BRAVO! And cheers to Straight's ex, for (a) coaching; and (b) coaching properly. Nice work.

Coach

I have a 3 year old daughter named Serena. This article brought a tear to my eye. Thank you for sharing your story.

Coach and divorced parents

What amazed and touched me most about this piece is that this is a woman writing about a wonderful aspect of her ex-husband. I can't imagine that happens too often! Their kids are so lucky.

I can only hope...

...I'd be as even-tempered coaching my kids. This was so heartfelt and real it made me cry.
