Of a King Kaufman book/collection?
I echo many others in saying that you're the reason I still read Salon and that you are, hands down, one of the best sports writers it has been my pleasure to read.
I was really hoping you were gonna say the column was going to start coming in twice daily.
King,
We will keep up the good fight against place-kickers deciding football games, idiotic times-out management, useless sideline reporters, publicly financed stadia and Jeannie Zelasko (among other crimes against the sporting public). But I doubt we'll be nearly as effective (or entertaining) as you have been.
Thanks. And Bravo.
Thank you for all the years of excellent reading. It is always a pleasure to read your column every day. And as long as this is your decision (and not some editorial cutback), I will respect that and be content with less. Keep up the good work, and I look forward to the ones you do write.
Just read your "The end of the daily" article and want to say thanks for the great writing - it's sad to read Salon is going through hard times and your column won't appear as frequently. Your writing - and the Salon site a whole - is almost always thoughtful, incisive and a terrific read. Hope better days lie ahead. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, thanks for the great work!
This was the column that grabbed me and made me a daily reader:
http://www.salon.com/news/sports/col/kaufman/2004/04/20/tuesday/index.html
Your insistence on taking a contrary view in all things sports is your greatest asset. That ability kept me coming back. Oh yeah, and you're funny as hell.
Thanks and good luck.
Dude, you are the Keith Olbermann of the Web. Seriously. Do what you have to do...we're still with you. All best.
Have enjoyed the column a great deal! Looking forward to continuing to hear from you (but without quite so much stress). Hoping you and Salon can both hang on through the downturn.
Although I'm a monthly columnist for a fairly well known magazine in a niche sport, I consider my proudest journalistic moment to be the time that King Kaufman included my tip that the Detroit Pistons had misspelled the team name in the web address printed on top of their backboards - Pitons.com
As long as you're writing, I'll be reading.
I've been reading your column for years, but this is the first time I've written in. Your column is easily the best thing to read on sports that I've ever seen. And by "sports" I mean more than just sports, which is why I like your column so much: for the extra angles you bring to it.
Doing 1-1/2 jobs beats not having one at all. Good luck.
Your writing on sports is both the smartest and most entertaining around. I went to Stanford, so I hope you don't think this an insult. You strike just the right balance of current fact, commentary, and idiosycratic humor.
I'll just look forward to a column whenever the muse (and the boss, and the wife, and the kids, and ... ) allow.
Thanks, and good luck.
I will now visit Salon more and I will tell my friends to check in as well...I have been terribly disappointed and not a happy sports fan whenever King wrote about race and sports in our country..
From my vantage point King suffered from the same cultural blind spot that has stained MSM sports coverage forever in our country, his insight and depth on sports from the perspective of Black fans and Black athletes sucked and bordered often on ignorance and pulp fiction..
In part his shortcomings reflected the same shorcomings of his industry and peers, very few Black editors and Black sportswriters.. I doubt if King had an in house reference pintof color to bounce ideas and issues with ..Salon just recently hired it's first Black staffer and that fact alone is offensive...King as with most white reporters and pundits often never quoted black sports experts or invited them as guest writers..
I do hope this change in King's assigment will enhance the sports coverage on Salon..To be candid I doubt it but I will of course KEEP HOPE ALIVE
Sorry to hear this, King. Sorry for myself, at least. You certainly deserve the extra flexibility and change in pace. You and Greenwald are the only two people keeping this place afloat. I haven't posted here much (at all?) but I've read your column almost every single day for more years than I care to admit. You are, for my money, the best sports columnist in the US. I look forward to the new incarnation, and even harbor a little hope that your new responsibilities will help raise the level of the game played around here in general.
... and hopefully there will be more (albeit fewer per week) columns to come. I have enjoyed reading you immensely all these years, King; day in an day out, yours was the one column I would NEVER miss. Knowledge plus writing skill plus wise-ass humor is a never-fail catnip combo for me. And I dearly loved forwarding you on to my college-age sports-addled son, the Rick Reilly/Bill Simmons fan. So, sorry you have to get dressed to go to work now, and more sorry to have less of you, but I will be looking forward to reading whatever you write whenever you happen to write it. Best of luck to you!
Glad to hear we're not totally losing you. Best of luck in your new role.
"They're called comp days, people. I work a lot of weekends."
Working weekends? You mean watching sports and drinking beer?!?
Seriously, thanks for "The Daily". I'll still check in to read the less than daily.
Red Leg
...how many people in the letters are saying that they read and enjoy the column despite not really being into sports. That says a lot.
Good luck with the new schedule, and so glad you're not going away. Give your little coin-flippers a hug for me.
