Go ahead, jump on the bandwagon

Being a fan of a losing team isn't a sign of character. It's a consumer choice. So is newfound passion for the Phillies or Rays.

    This Cubs/Sox fan can relate

Excellent point, King, one that not enough sports fans follow, to their sorrow. I'm a lifelong Cubs and Sox fan, but I really kind of detached with love from the Cubs after the Sox won in '05. It hit me like a ton of bricks at that point that I had literally been waiting a lifetime (AND STILL COUNTING) for the Cubs to win it all. I started to feel like a sucker. That's why their October collapse this year didn't hurt me all that much; I had already chosen to invest a lot less than in the past. (And unlike your consumer comparison, the investment here is a lot more than money; it's all tied up into who you are, where you're born, who your dad rooted for--we're talking pieces of your soul!) Going forward, if the Cubs get better, so will my fanship. But they're really not going to get me all the way back until they win the World Series. Does that make me a bad fan? No way--just slightly less crazy and sad one. What's wrong with that?
