Why, umpires with whistles, of course...
They better not fire my DADDY cause my DADDY helps me with all my right FOOTBALL PIX!--Mr. Buster
Them better not fire my DADDY 'cause my Daddy give me coin to flip and he helps me flip the coin too and once when I ate the coin he said, Daisy don't eat the coin, it's dirty, and so then I said Daddy I didn't really eat the coin but my BIG BROTHER, Mr. Buster, pretended that he did eat the coin, but he really didn't!!!--Ms Daisy (ALA buster Jr.)
At first this move seemed insane, but I guess if you really become convinced that your manager is shitty, it doesn't necessarily make sense to keep him just because there are only 12 games left. If you are going to the playoffs, you want to give yourself the best chance to win, and if that means a different manager, then so be it.
Probably would have been better for everyone if they had realized it before the season though.
Thanks for the good chuckle to start my day.
This is fine with me. Might as well try something. At the beginning of September, the Brewers playoff odds were approximately 93%. This is a historic collapse, and its going to be a brutal winter for this team and fans. So why not?
Yost has always sucked at managing a bullpen, though this year it hasn't been so bad, really. We lost a few games b/c of Eric Gagne and his useless 10 million dollar arm. What is maddening about Yost is his absolute loyalty to "gritty" players. Jason Kendall has played a ridiculous amount of games. Craig Counsell. Bill Hall. Mix it up, you know, give some of these guys a breather.
If anyone wants to see an amazing Brewers site, try out brewcrewball.com - and they have been calling for this firing for, oh about six years.
but firing him now sends one clear message to fans and players alike - "we're desperate." That's not what Brewers' management should be telling their team that's struggling with another late-season fold-up. There's plenty of time in the off-season to fire anyone who needs it. The Brewers are a young team that will get better, and maybe that means hiring a new manager, but not now.
That Kat DeLuna, whoever the hell she is, getting booed for singing the National Anthem on MNF? Awesome. Fist Bump!
Is C.C. SABATHIA the MVP for the NL or the CY YOUNG winner??? [And C.C. can hit too!!!]
You've been my daily go-to sports columnist for great, no-bullshit analysis on my wavelength. Before I go to Deadspin or dead-tree writers, I have to see what King Kaufman has to say.
A lot of people do not see it as a young team that will be better next year and the year after that. They are almost guaranteed to lose CC Sabathia and Ben Sheets next year, their two best starting pitchers. Acquiring CC in July was huge for this team and showed that the owner was serious about turning the Brewers into a championship team. Most of us fans see this as the big chance that won't come around again for what could be a long time. Sure, there is some desperation there. But the fans love it that Mark A. is serious about making this a winning team and will take risks to do so.
My emotional trajectory through the past 24 hours goes: depression, shock, happiness, hopefulness, terror. I have no idea what's next but I can't wait to watch the Brewers tonight.
How about firebudselieg.com or it's synonym site: foregoneconclusion.com?
has already been written.
But, throwing my two cents in, Yost should have been fired long ago - either after last season or after the Cubs or Mets series where the Brew Crew was handled easily. Keep in mind it is not only their previous season the Brewers are thinking of but also the Mets and how they carried that collapse into the next, present, season. I doubt the team would even want Yost around next year had they made the playoffs.
True - he doesn't swing a bat but the manager has a strong psychological influence on the team - anyone who played sports as a kid knows that. Remember the series in Boston? Braun basically said they didn't expect to win and weren't all that enthused about playing.
And as someone mentioned earlier - there are players in the lineup way too much, not just Kendall and Counsell who do what is asked of them but constant whiffers like Hall, Weeks, Cameron and of course Gagne.
Tony Gwynn Jr. started off the season in place of Cameron and was terrific - why he, and other good young players, haven't been given a chance amidst constant everyday player struggles is beyond me.
to all the Brewers signed to long term contracts that are guaranteed (unlike the NFL) to start playing hard and quit being lazy... oh, wait they have no reason to change because they'll get paid no matter what. This was a message to Prince Fielder that he'll be traded to KC if he doesn't stop punching his teammates in the dugout instead of the clubhouse. The Brewers are hoping they don't pull a 07 Mets and choke the playoffs away. Firing the manager won't get you out of a hitting slump or suddenly put the Astros into a tail spin. It was a pointless move to silence offseason bitching by the fans so they can be "excited" about 2009.
And Tony LaRussa will be managing the Cardinals until his knees give out.
The poor Brewers. Can't do ANYTHING right. I can't think of anything worse than firing the manager in the middle of a (admittedly Wild Card, but still) pennant drive. They really don't want to win, and this proves it.
And how is firing him going to pull him out of it? As far as I'm concerned, all firing the manager of a winning ball club in the middle of a slump does is discourage the team--when they need encouragement the most.
You don't fire a manager when you're tied for a playoff spot. Not if you want to win. You fire him after the season, after he's failed. Yost hadn't failed--YET.
You fire managers in the middle of the season when they're out of it, or when they're as out of it as the Cardinals are--or Pittsburgh.
Oy.
