Bush to Olympians: Win (nicely)

The president talks about cherished American values -- curiously, without mentioning advertising or kicking butt.

The letters thread is now closed.

Bush the cheerleader

This is almost too easy, but at least the guy is good for something.

the mask thing

I live next to Chinatown in Toronto, where the people are prone to suddenly, and without warning, wearing air masks en masse.

which, after the whole SARS thing, is creepy as hell.

tit for tat I guess :)

p.s. as for the cheering thing - please US fans, keep the chants of USA!USA! to a minimum...that really chaps us loser nation's asses

;)

Welcome back

Heya King...I was doubtful about this blog thing when you rolled it out, but after reading todays entry and the one about minor league bloggers I have to admit that I was wrong (how un-Amurcin of me. GW would be sore disappointed) and that you are, as ever, the King...I will come back daily once again...(see? there's even a magic button on my browser)...

Tuesday, July 22, 2008 07:50 AM

Not to change the subject, but I will anyway...

...because I don't care for any of the Summer Olympics. (The Winter Games, on the other hand, have my undivided attention for most of the two weeks.)

You lost one of your greatest colleagues yesterday, Mr. King. Jerome Holtzman (we locals called him "Jerry" behind his back :-) !) of the Chicago Tribune and Sun-Times ascended to the ultimate skybox seat yesterday. This man was a "class act," a rarity among today's sportswriters. And as noted in the obits, he "invented" the save statistic and earned the eternal gratitude of relief pitchers everywhere.

Hail and Farewell, Jerry! And could you slip a note to the Big Guy to please give us a Cubs victory this year? Chicagoans love "clout" you know!

There is no God.

Bush said this: "As ambassadors of liberty," Bush said, "you will represent America's love for freedom and our regard for human rights and human dignity."

The Torture and Invasion President wasn't struck by lightning.

There is no God.

Unless, God was napping.

The Olympics are going to be awesome

One whole team will be deported and at least one athlete will be arrested or shot by the police. A few smallish riots, one fire, one building collapse and some ceremony will be canceled because there are tanks in the streets. Moreover the Chinese government will censor US television, blackout certain events and demand broadcast delays regardless of what their contracts say. For the judged events Chinese athletes will rake in the gold to the complete stupefaction of nearly everyone else.

America, f+ck yeah!

Advertising. Kicking butt. Overspending. Overeating. Watching too much television. Overworking. Underproducing. Racing to the bottom as fast as we can.

Just give me some Liu Xiang. That'll be fun to watch. And Bob Costas. Because I like that midget.

A Billion on Your Back

Mikes Pace said: 'Just give me some Liu Xiang. That'll be fun to watch.'

Mr. Xiang will be under the most pressure of any Olympic athlete. Defending champion at 110m HH, set world record (since broken) in Athens. Beat the Americans (and everyone else) in a sprinting event we have dominated for over 60 years.

Our hurdlers (plus Cuban world record holder, etc.) burn to beat him on his home turf.

For me, it will be probably the most anticipated men's track event. I'm beginning to get stoked!

Paul in KY

don't you mean Mr. Liu?

forget Olympiad - it's Hall of Fame week

Olympics as a display of character and sportsmanship blah blah blah - why a monstrous regime like the Chinese gets to host a symbol of international brotherhood is absolutely stupefying -

anyway, it's Cooperstown week and while it's a nice story for Goose, he's likely to be overshadowed by this: the best position player and best starting pitcher of the last 25 years are out of baseball and the HOF clock is ticking - will either or both get in?

cult of special cases

Go Cubs!

USA has no standing to protest human rights

All these folks who want to boycott because China oppresses people are living in the past. The USA has killed so many middle-easterners, and invaded so many countries, that we, as a nation, have no right to take any human rights stance.

So... Go American athletes! And after you win, or after you lose, maybe take your own personal stances. But, please just have fun and do well. We will be rooting for you.

X-Mas?? There is no hell . . .

As a better man than I'll ever be would say, some Idjit writes:

"One whole team will be deported and at least one athlete will be arrested or shot by the police. A leetle bitterness here, Xmas?? Not that it matters, but 'Murica really doesn't matter as much as your trite attempt at satire would have it.

You don't have athletes. You have Corporate Representatives. Christ. Dope, ego, and English as a Second Language??

Your team won't be deported. They'll be treated with respect & decorum. Try that in 'Murica these-a-days.

The Chinese will censor US television?? Why bother??

C'mon, it ain't 1955 anymore. America's infra-structure is shrinking. China's is growing. And education??? Sheesh, don't get us started. Even the Asian kids educated in 'Murica are way ahead of the curve -- you'd be proof of that.

China may be not-so-good, but heck, I'd rather be in Beijing than say, your little berg.

OLYMPICS PART THREE: CHINA–LET THE GAMES BEGIN, BUT WHY THERE?

OLYMPICS PART THREE: CHINA–LET THE GAMES BEGIN, BUT WHY THERE?

Posted on Thursday, July 24, 2008 1:26:41 AM by Gene Lalor

If all the hype about the meaning and reasoning behind the Olympics ever meant anything, (See Part One), why, just a few generations after the inception of the modern Olympiad, was Hitler’s Germany awarded the 1936 Games?

Why were the 1980 Olympics held in the U.S.S.R., a nation which had an obscene record of terror, international intrigue, militarism, and repression in Eastern Europe, and which had invaded Afghanistan less than a year earlier.

And why in the name of God were this summer’s Olympics bestowed upon the warlike, autocratic, and repressive People’s Republic of China?

Aside from the fact China is World Class Polluter #1 whose cities are barely habitable due to their poor air quality and whose waterways are fetid cesspools...
