Boselli
Sure, Houston sucks, but you're being unfair. In the expansion draft, they took Tony Boselli first.
Now, injuries ended up making that a bust, but the idea was there. If you're going to start a franchise from scratch, start with your left tackle.
Carolina took a DB then a tackle in their expansion draft.

NHL
Can the Red Wings' defense, led by Nicklas Lidstrom, shut down Matt Holliday and the Rockies? Will the Colorado hitters be able to generate power while sliding all over the ice? We'll find out Thursday, when the Conference Semi-finals kick off at The Joe!
-
NHL
The hockey team in Colorade is the Avalanche. The Rockies left Denver in 1982 to become the New Jersey Devils. So, no Rockies for the last 26 years.
I guess you really do not watch much hockey!
Go Habs Go!!!

Flyers 2nd goal
I don't see how the NHL can possibly want a goal like the Flyers 2nd to be a legal play. How is that, if not goaltender interference then at least regular old interference? The puck was nowhere nearby. You can't just bowl a guy into his goalkeeper so your teammate has a wide open net to shoot at. Those two "veteran" referees really screwed the pooch on that one. In the immortal words of Jim Schoenfeld, "Go have another donut!"
-
NHL playoffs
Also, the third paragraph should start 'Flyers-Caps' and not 'Flames-Caps'. I'm sure these typos are just to check to see if anyone is reading the hockey articles. Keep 'em coming!
Cheers,
Mark.

Rockies? Those Seventies flashbacks must suck.
To make up for it, call the Royals the "Scouts" someday. Don't worry, it's the Royals. Nobody will notice.
The NHL's explanation of the goalie interference no-call makes sense, if you think about it. Morrison played the puck, Thoresen hit Morrison, and they both fell into Huet. If Morrison isn't playing the puck, that's interference.
It looks worse than it is because of that horrible call on Kozlov earlier in the series.
And it's nice to see that Iron Mike Keenan still has his backup goalie on a hair trigger.
-
Round Deux
Now that the Bruins are out, I hope to see the Canadiens beat the Flyers, if only to see more of the Habs uncalled cheap shots, cross-checks and interferences. The Flyers deserve a taste of their own medicine.
@Glenn A
That non-call is SOP for the league and referees when dealing with the Flyers this season.

that second goal
was garbage, and I say this as someone who kinda wanted Philly to win (would rather my Habs not play against that freak of nature Lundqvist just yet).
There's no way you can argue that Thorensen (sp?) didn't knock the D-man into Huet, who was still in the crease, sure it may not be regular old interference, but how could it not be goaltender (or as ol' Chretien used to say "goaler") interference? It's a shame that such a brilliant series gets marred by such a crappy call.
The penalty in OT? Not such a crappy call...it was tripping.

No wonder they lost
Sharks-Flames wasn't great, as seventh games go
Flames-Caps was a lot more entertaining
They had to play 2 games in one night? No wonder they lost! Travel alone must have exhausted them.
As far as the Draft goes, there's a lot of talk in Green Bay right now that you take the "best player on the board" when your time comes to pick and you don't pay attention to position. I can see this working over a long time-span, but if you do this when you're in desperate need of a better O-Line or other position, will you still be at the team years later when it starts to pay off?
And signing a player before the draft? I suppose that can work for the first team to pick, but what about the rest of them? Can the #2 team start negotiating now? And since they have him signed to a contract, what's to stop them from drafting someone else #1?
-
The draft
When did we start seeing this whole "sign the first pick before the draft" thing? Was Williams the first? Alex Smith? It seems odd to me, that you can agree on a contract before you actually hire the guy...but then the draft always seemed a little weird to me anyways, in what other field can you say to someone "hey, you're working for us! And if you don't like it too bad, you can't work for anybody else unless we let you!"?
it's kinda creepy.

If you look at it like you're working for the NFL instead of a specific team, it isn't so weird. And sure, it is an unusual practice, limited to sports, but sports are unusual in and of themselves from the exemptions they get for being monopolies to the compensation levels for the workers.

Lynx
Yeah, I know...it's just always seemed weird to me (the draft, in any sport).
I hadn't thought about it until Eric Lindros refused to play for Quebec, and while that stoked my nationalist fires, I had to concede that his position made sense.
I do understand though that if you want into that exclusive job market then you gotta play by their rules...it's just that their rules are kind of weird.
-
I think that Dallas...
signed Aikmen before the draft in '89.

I agree, it is odd, but at least the system isn't as bad as it used to be when players had no choice at all. After they've played for the team that drafts them for a few years, they can switch. It used to be they had no say in the matter at all.
And even though part of me thinks they should have more say in the matter of where they start, I still get pissed at whiny jackasses like John Elway who refused to play for the team that drafted him. You're going to be paid a fortune, you're going to be able to name your price and play for whatever team you want in a few years and you're whining that you'll have to play for a particular team? You knew the deal going into this, suck it up and play.
