Canadiens beat Bruins in a Game 7 that isn't a classic, but is just one of three in two days. Plus: Victory riot decorum, please.

  • Rioting in Sports

    I blame Ohio State. When I lived in Columbus in the mid-90s, the students rioted after ever football game. Home game win? Riot. Home game loss? Riot. Away game win? Riot. Away game loss? Riot. The riots were a little worse if they played Penn State or Michigan or some other hated rival, but the order of the day was: The game is about over, the police have lined up, the students have prepared with binge drinking and have the couches and cars ready for burning. The football game is over, start your rioting, fire extinguishers and tear gas!

  • Alex Ovechkin ... who had been held scoreless in his first playoff series, scored twice as the Caps forced a Game 7.

    Uh, King - Ovechkin scored the winning goal in game 1 if I remember correctly.

    I too long for the days when a riot in Montreal was an act of defiance - a justified reaction to a perceived injustice. Like the suspension of the Rocket, or a shortened Guns & Roses concert...

  • Montreal and riots

    Montreal has a special relationship with sports riots. The Richard riots were an opening salvo in the Quiet Revolution.

    Hmm, are the Quebec Liberals or the Ottawa Conservatives the target for this one?

  • post-goal music at the Bell Center

    OK. The B's are out of it. I am bummed about the loss - especially a 5-0 loss. I think Tim Thomas deserved to go out better than that. But, hey! They made it to game 7 which was way beyond everyone's expectations.

    So now I can focus my attention elsewhere and maybe someone here knows the answer to my question.

    The Bell Center's choice of pre-game, during-game, after-goal and post-game music all equals U2. And not even good U2. "Where the Streets Have No Name" is a political song (and not a very upbeat one at that) and it's the pre-game music. The after-goal music is some other not upbeat nor catchy U2 song.

    Does anyone know why the Bell Center hockey show producers have such an affinity for U2?

  • @Just Sayin'

    You're right -- Ovie did score the winning goal in Game 1. I was there and the Phone Booth went nuts. Last night though -- that gorgeous breakaway and wicked slapshot to cement the win should leave no doubts -- Ovie MVP!

  • Hockey fans

    It's 9:15 a.m. here on the West Coast. Today's King Kaufman article is about hockey. There are 5 letters in the Comments section. On any other topic, there are usually at least 30 by now. So, all you hockey fans who rag on King for not writing about hockey, this is why he doesn't write about hockey: nobody cares.

  • @ cgower

    Point out to me more than one Sports Daily article that has thirty or more letters attributed to it within the last seven days...

    Go ahead, I'll wait.

    In the meantime, if you're so interested in the letter count, perhaps you could ask King to discuss Danica's Indy win last weekend. I'm sure that will bring out all the anti-feminist trolls.

  • @cgower

    What's your favorite sport that is not one of the ESPN Triumvirate: Football, Baseball, and Basketball?

    I'm curious because I'd like to return the favor.

    When your sport is in the playoffs, or it's most significant event, I'd like to drop in on the conversation from out of the blue, and rip on the game and its fans for no good reason.

    Having been a life-long hockey fan, I've wondered what it's like to dish out what I've been receiving every April from the likes of you.

  • Just sayin' is all

    'course if you go back more than 7 days, they all are more than 30 letters. Nice to set the bar wherever you'd like. Of course, then you have to factor out however many "twitter" posts WES has made. And here you have to subtract any posts about rioting or about how hockey "doesn't matter! Does so!". If you feel like doing all that math, be my guest.

    Even King says in his article "Look, someone's playing hockey!" It just doesn't make that big an impression anymore, if it ever did.

  • The Bruins

    had guts and worked hard but ultimately that wasn't enough. Looking forward to watching San Jose and Calgary game 7 match. It's been quite a series so far.

  • re-seeding

    "If the Flyers win, they'll play the Canadiens and the Penguins will play the New York Rangers. "

    I think that the NHL re-seeds based on points, which will result in Montreal playing the winner of tonights Flyers / Caps game... but i could be wrong.

  • YESS!!!

    Man, last night I just about ran through even human emotion possible watching my beloved Habs almost choke away to the hated Bruins. Had they lost I NEVER would've lived that down.

    No really, I had 9 missed calls and 13 emails taunting me after Saturday night's debacle. And not from only Bruins fans, mostly from Leafs fans who just love piling it on :)

    Honestly though, how great is Carey Price? I'm starting the believe all the hype about that kid. Did you see the interview after the game? He JUST finished up a shutout in his first NHL Playoff Game Seven and he didn't even crack a smile! Talk about calm under pressure!

    wtf??

    In Bob We Trust!

    Habs 08!

  • All sports are dumb and pointless, except curling

    But King writing about them makes them interesting. Even hockey.

  • @ Lynx

    Of course, if you look at the articles after April 14th, you'll see the number of posts for each total more than 30. What you're ignoring is the topic of these articles:

    1. Favre's (potential) flip-flop;

    2. The Olympic torch relay; AND

    3. The NCAA finale.

    Two of three which, I grant you, are far more important, and more likely to cause a spike in letters, than a first round playoff hockey game.

    But to use cgower's logic, if an article receives less than the (arbitrary) 30 letter count, well then, nobody cares about that particular sport. Well let's just do away with baseball then since the baseball preview failed to meet cgower's requirements...

    Okay, I'll stop now, lest I get accused of simply inflating the number of responses to this article.

  • Two points...

    @non-hockey fans

    My numbers aren't scientific. This is just an observation, but posts to this column have atrophied considerably over the past week or so. I attribute this to a combination of articles-about-basketball-overload and school vacation. Those busy parents are not at work and do not have the same "free time" to post from home as they do while at work. ;o)

    The lack of posts today (thus far) is in no way indicative of a lack of interest in hockey from the readers of this column. As evidenced by other columns that were not even about hockey, there are plenty of us willing to discuss this excellent sport. Wherever and whenever.

    @Habs continuing their season

    I hope they beat the Flyers, if that is their next challenge. The Flyers should have had their season canceled because of the their "play" early on this season. They behaved like undisciplined mercenaries and caused some very serious injuries to some very good players.
