Letters to the Editor

Lynx, you must live in that part of the world where men's college basketball (are they allowed to hit in that league? Defend? Ppphhht...yawn) and NASCAR are big ticket items.
Nope, I don't really care that much about any sport other than football. I'm looking forward to the upcoming draft. I'm still sad that Favre retired. I'm hoping to go to some Women's League Football this spring. I also don't really expect King to cover any of it.
The NHL has been daring its fans to care. I'm not surprised King hasn't bothered with it.

Go Sharks
AchillesisCrying Neither should you be
Neither should I be what?
Just stick to the sports, pal.
So you're my editor. You've just volunteered for some tough duty there, pal.
China is involved with a lot of nasty stuff. Don't give me this Olympic purity crap.
Me? What?
The fact that you write for Salon aside, you're still just a sports writer, like Jay Mariotti.
Ooh, the sting. Well, the fact that you're posting in Salon's letters thread aside, you're just a (whatever you are) just like (some other person who you think sucks at whatever it is you do).
Ha-har! Checkmate!
breezefla Yes, King has flogged the NCAA hoops tournaments for all they were worth, is now taking on the "sport" of the Olympic torch relay, and will no doubt hold forth at length on the Masters very soon.
Re the emphasized part only: Falser words have never been written in this space.

Dumb story
What's the point of this story? That all of the protesters are just involved in meaningless politics? Heaven forbid anyone have an opinion about the Olympics that is anything but positive.
The entire idea that sport will somehow triumph over oppression and hate is total bullshit. China will attempt to use these games as PR to convince the world that its not a brutal dictatorship. Let's wait and see if the world wide sports media buys this line of crap this summer. I bet they will. I hope you and Salon wont be involved in that.

Lynx
Yeah me and the hundreds of Salon ZPG loons. Stow it sistah.

@mhatkinson
Unless you live in Canada I have a hard time believing that the focus of your sports news has been hockey. Even the NY Post didn't put the Rangers vs. Devils game on the back page. King isn't alone in not caring about the NHL. The NCAA Woman's National Championship game easily outdrew (3.0/1.9) the highest rated NBC game from last years Stanley Cup Finals, it even had more viewers than the Canadian Broadcast of the Stanley Cup finals. Of course, if your argument is that King should devote more time to niche sports, than you are fully justified in your complaint.

Mike from Metuchen
I guess I'll have to come to the realization that hockey is a niche sport in the US but I don't quite understand why.
It's arguably the fastest and hardest hitting sport.
And I don't buy the argument that there's not enough scoring because I don't think sports fans are looking for "scoring" so much as they are "scoring chances" in the NHL. I'd bet that there are as many, if not more, goals in a hockey game as there are touchdowns in American football.
Is it marketing? Cultural?
I mean, basketball didn't survive in Vancouver because after everyone had gone and seen a game they didn't really need to go again. I don't think it was ever considered anything to get seroius about.
Thoughts?

Origin of the Olympic Emblem -- correction
Lynx
Thank you for the correction on the origin of the Olympic emblem.
According to Wikipedia anyway, the original founder of the modern games came up with it; however, it was popularized by the Third Reich for the 1936 games.
The torch bearing from Delphi in Greece, the original Olympic site, to Berlin was meant to symbolize the passing of the torch from the ancient great western civilization to the modern reincarnation, i.e. the Third Reich.

@Mike from Metuchen
Not to be a dick or anything, but I think you should be a bit more careful when you call hockey a niche sport. I know it's en vogue to do so of late (did I really just type "en vogue"?!) to call the NHL a "niche league", but a quick look at the NHL attendance figures for last year shows a league wide attendance of 19.976 million. The NBA, which is pretty comprable in length of season and seating capacity (they play in the same stadia) set a record in 2006 with 21.8 million.
21.8 million compared with 19.9 million.
not so much niche.
niche on tv sure, but not niche outright.
cheers
p.s. GO HABS!

I do Apologize
King Kaufman,
Don't be bitter because I am calling out yet another example of the hackery on Salon (of which there is plenty). Also, as you clearly have time to read these letter threads, note that I am not alone in my opinion.
Just to clear up some confusion, by saying that I am the same as someone who does the same thing I do "Suckily" was your word, I think, are you saying that Jay Mariotti sucks, and then, by self-implication, admitting that you too suck.
I never said Jay Mariotti sucks. I just said you share the same profession.
-
"Falser words have never been written in this space"
I take some offense to that comment.

Is it marketing? Cultural?
Having always lived in the South, I've walked on a frozen lake once. That's why I have no point of contact with hockey, which is very regionally determined by its very nature (and when it's not regionally determined, it's financially determined. A baseball glove and cleats are damn cheap compared to ice time and all that gear, I'd guess).
That said, the hockey that I've seen in person (a minor minor league team) was pretty kickass. It's not so good on tv, though.

I'm not bitter.
I just thought this: "you're still just a sports writer, like Jay Mariotti" meant that YOU (that is: you) think Jay Mariotti sucks. So my point was: The fact that Jay Mariotti is a sportswriter and sucks (according to you) doesn't mean that all sportswriters suck just because they're sportswriters, and Jay Mariotti is a sportswriter, and sucks. It's like one of those A = B does not mean B = C things from high school. Only I made a joke out of it and pretended that by saying the same thing as you, only even dumber, I had trumped you. See, that was, like, a joke.
None of which is to say that I don't suck. Don't get me wrong. But do try to keep up.
