National League preview: As the steroid cloud starts to lift, an unjuiced look at the senior circuit.

The Yankees may have had a lot of talent, but they didn't have a lot in the way of pitching, and that's what wins world series titles. Also, I respectfully diagree with your assessment of Torre's lack of "gravitas." Though he was not a very good NL manager he certainly revived his managerial career with the Yankees. Most fans can't recall last week let alone ten to fifteen years ago so the memories and image of Torre as a below average manager or even as a radio announcer have been replaced by Torre as the stoic, quietly strong tamer of New York. I think Torre now carries that image to Los Angeles, and in an image conscious city like L.A., perception goes a long way towards reality. He is the Queen of England.
