  • No law says everyone gets to watch

The big difference between that game and this one is that just about everyone in the United States could watch that one from their living room couch

Well, as much as it would be nice for the US of A to become one big happy TV connected family on Thurs. night - there is no law or dictate that it must be so.

Besides, people CAN still see the game. They can go out to their nearest Sports bar and share in the thrill with dozens of like minded fans - instead of being insulated in their own little cocoons. There is way too much insularity already.

Over where I am all the Sports bars are putting on a lot of extra manpower to cope with the expected influx.

    Hell, it will be great.

People need to stop pissing and moaning about the NFL Network and find the bright spot - the opportunity to go out and cheer with other fans.

  • For city dwellers, sports bars might be the answer

Unless, of course, you'd rather watch the game without having to buy a twelve-dollar plate of wings.

Anyhow, those of us in rural America are once more left without much by way of recourse.

  • I wondered where that Colts game was

I'd heard they were playing last Thursday, but didn't find them on the telemavision. Then Sunday morning I heard they won. (Yeah, I don't really follow this stuff that closely.)

  • Nyah, Nyah, Nyah

I'm on Cox and not only do we get NFLNT on the basic tier, we get it in HDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Grey Cup coverage

Any idea how many US households were able to view the Grey Cup?

A part of me wants very badly for CFL and NFLN households to intersect, simply to point up the ridiculousness of the situation for The First League Whose Games Are (Were) All On Network TV.

  • The Wetzel Plan Is Okay

But I say no more than 2 from a conference. Because the reasons someone would get more would be total bullshit..... "Oh the SEC is so tough their 2 and 3 loss teams take prioroty over others."

  • His Field

Ignores the Tennessee SEC Champ possibility. Then the SEC would have 4?

  • The chocolate is round and the earth tastes good

For the last couple of days we have been forced to confront the horrible news about a young man who happened to be a star athlete who was cut down in the prime of life. Many of the comments assume that this forces us to confront what is really important in life. But for way too much of the male population what seems to be really important is not family and community or, looking more broadly the humungous national budget, the looming environmental catastrophe, the immigration crisis, or the ongoing war in Iraq. No -- what really matters is the absence of a playoff system in college football, depriving them of the certitude of a "true" national champion, like they have in basketball (you remember 1986, don't you, when Villanova "proved" that those three previous losses to Georgetown were a mirage).

Here's my solution -- get over it! Just think how this year any formula would probably exclude the best team in the country because it lost two games owing to that assinine NCAA marathon death overtime system because the same yahoos who insist we have a "true" national championship also couldn't stand the idea of a game ending in a tie.

  • It's a good plan

While it's true we'd be bitching about whether Florida gets in or someone else, or if the SEC was over-rated and the Big Ten under-rated, it's much of the same complaining that you get when the March brackets are released--in other words, there'd be some brief protests from near-top-tier schools who lost one too many games. The the first games are played, and everyone forgets about Jim Boeheim and enjoys a real tournament with real consequences.

I'll take those brief and ultimately inconsequential complaints (did anyone think Syracuse really could have beaten Florida last year?) over the travesty that is the BCS.

The only real question I have is this: What can fans do to effect change?

  • Don't blow your spot in the standings

No pick King? You should make one before gametime so you don't conceed a game to the people who are picking in your contest. (Hint: Take the Packers)

  • football

Packers vs. Cowboys = further proof that the NFL is evil.

College football. All those things King said.

I went to my alma mater's big game this year - I don't want to imagine a world without those games.

    But, playoffs. PLAY,OFFS?

Well, actually, I'm all for it. I believe that no one will outcoach or outrecruit Jim Tressel. But I won't ask these young men to play 4 more games for my enjoyment without giving them each at least 10k per game (straight out of the Athletic Department budget). So, until the cash happens, viva la BCS.

Will OU lay down to preserve a BigXII national title shot?? hahha, Mizzou is going down. They'll probably give up 41 points again.

    O-H..

  • Some replies

droogoy Well, as much as it would be nice for the US of A to become one big happy TV connected family on Thurs. night - there is no law or dictate that it must be so.

Who said anything about laws or dictates. We're talking about the NFL's business policies, its treatment of its customers.

The Notorious W.E.S. The Wetzel Plan Is Okay ... But I say no more than 2 from a conference. Because the reasons someone would get more would be total bullshit..... "Oh the SEC is so tough their 2 and 3 loss teams take prioroty over others."

I can go along with that.

    Lynx: No pick King?

Forgot. I'll add one by late-morning, Pacific time.

  • @Droogoy

It's true that there's no law mandating that everyone gets to watch, but there should be. Football is subsidized by taxpayers' dollars (e.g., stadiums) and has no business being shown on cable at all.

  • It's actually a myth...

... that tryptophan makes you drowsy. It's actually all the carbs you eat WITH the turkey that knocks you out on T-Day.

    That's all.

  • Sorry, King, the bowl system is better

People complain that the only reason the NCAA hasn't scrapped the bowl system in favor of a playoff is because they bring in too much money. But if the bowl system brings in more money than the playoffs would, doesn't that mean it's a superior system because it's making more customers happy?
