As a Midwest native and New England resident

I think the most annoying thing about Red Sox/Yankees rivalry is many of the fans' utter myopia that a baseball world outside Red Sox/Yankees even exists. Even my beloved boyfriend literally sneers at the idea of National League baseball. He didn't want to watch the NLDS or CS with me, so he (and many others in this part of the country, I suspect) have no idea how good the Rockies are. I teach at a local college, and one of my students actually said to me, "I just can't believe that anyone would root for Cleveland. It's like rooting for St. Louis. Who outside of St. Louis roots for the Cardinals?" Well, I'm from Ohio and went to school in Indiana, so yes, Virginia, there are people who root for the Indians and who root for the Cardinals. Many people, in fact.

And those same talk-radio guys who were calling for a Red Sox sweep before the ALCS began are now being "cautiously optimistic" and predicting the Red Sox win in five games. I'm sure very few of them would be able to pick Troy Tulowitski out of a lineup.
