Nothing I say should suggest I think there is parity in baseball. But if you don't think you can blame the Pirates ownership for the failures of the last decade and a half, your last name is either McClatchy or Nutting.
Your pal in despair, RM.

Hope the Kids are Living in the Past
I remember well how every trip to Minnesota was a disaster for my home team (I'm shocked to realize that it has been 10+ years). Given the age of your children--how do they remember that history? Being the pessimist that I am, they are probably right.

Wimpy early skeds leave teams unprepared for league
Colorado 27, #3 Oklahoma 24
Auburn 20, #4 Florida 17
South Florida 21, #5 W. Virginia 13
Kansas St. 41, #7 Texas 21
Maryland 34, #10 Rutgers 24
Compare the skeds of those who won -- coincidentally, Auburn has played both USF and K St. -- to those who lost. A steady diet of creampuffs, then red meat, leads to sour stomach. Con-funk-shus, my bookie, said that. Will teams adjust and add more challenging games in September?

Parity in baseball
I can't remember the date of the article (but King, if you're out there, help a brother out), but a while ago this very column confronted the issue of parity in baseball, and showed pretty clearly that the difference in parity between baseball and the other majors is an illusion created by the number of playoff spots. If 8 teams made the playoffs in baseball instead of 4, then you'd see just as much "parity" as in other sports.
