Unforgiven
Can't help but think about Clint Eastwood's last line to Gene Hackman.
"Deserve's got nothin' to do with it."
Bummer.

Question
What's hockey?
-
Answer
Hockey is a fast moving, exciting sport once considered to be one of the "Big 4" spots in the US, until a man named Bettman decreed that the league should be expanded enough to dilute the talent pool. It was also decided that teams should be taken from locations where the sport is extremely popular and moved to desert and tropical locations where there is little to no fan base.
Bettman then cleverly negotiated a television contract with a network no one had ever heard of.

RE: GullyFoyle
And do you believe everything Bush says when he steps up to a mic?
I'm sure that once Stoudemire and Diaw saw that there was no way to appeal their suspensions (what's up with that) and that any furthur negative comments could possibly result in fines, they towed the line and sucked it up. They're better men than the commish, that's for sure.
BTW, over the past few days I've noticed very little commentary on how instrumental TNT and ESPN were in making sure that everyone's attention was appropriately drawn to the 18" over the imaginary line the Suns were. I even watched SportsCenter the night it happened and the co-anchor even said something to the effect "Something the league office might want to look at" while "spotlighting" their feet in a slow motion replay.
Now given ESPN's Barry Bonds "Chasing Aaron" bullshit (leaving other game broadcasts to peek in on his at-bats), isn't ESPN's arbitrary highlight of only some atheletes' wrongdoings a bit disengenuous? And totally NOT THEIR JOB!!!

Another answer
Don't worry about what hockey is. No one gives two shits whether you like it or not. Those of us who do like it will seek it out and watch it, and those of you who don't can have a great time with golf, Nascar, football, basketball, etc.
-
Further Answer
Forgot to mention that, unlike basketball, hockey allows its players to actually play defense.
-
KStone, very nice soft bigotry of generalizations
They don't want young black guys to dress like young black guys dress now because it um...bothers...certain fans and media members
We also know how those white guys dress. All Dockers and golf shirts. And those Asian guys. All shower shoes and sweatshirts. And those Latinos with their white t-shirts, khakis pants and plaid shirt with only the top button buttoned.
News Flash- Not all black men wear oversized jerseys, pants halfway down their ass, sideways hat and gold teeth. Those who do look ridiculous, in most people's opinion. But it's not how "young black guys dress". It's how some guys who are influenced by hip-hop culture dress.
-
Yet another answer...
And would those not giving 2 shits about whether anyone likes hockey or not be the same people who complain every day about hockey's non-inclusion in King's columns.
In other words, what "What's Hockey?" guy is trying to tell you is that we don't give two shits about your two shits that you don't give. Get it?
-
Jonathon, you're missing the point
If you don't want to write about hockey then fine, don't write about it. At all. Don't have the only mention of the sport be some snarky remark about how nobody "gives two shits about it."
-
relax
geesh, if i've counted right, there's about a dozen shits no one is giving anyone.
King's readers are such a nice little community of likeminded (Wes excluded) sports fans, that I don't think it is too much of a problem if we few hockey fans talk about our little sport a bit. is it?
here in Buffalo, hockey is what we have in lieu of an economy or a future for our children. So we cherish it the way someone in a growing part of the country probably can't imagine.
King will write about hockey whenever it catches his attention (like when the Blues make a run and Buster's graduating from med school) and in the meantime, we'll just keep adding comments.
Buffalo is seven and then onto Detroit!

Well anon, that was pretty stupid...
"News Flash- Not all black men wear oversized jerseys, pants halfway down their ass, sideways hat and gold teeth. Those who do look ridiculous, in most people's opinion. But it's not how "young black guys dress". It's how some guys who are influenced by hip-hop culture dress."
News Flash- Kill the noise. I'd rather believe my lying eyes as opposed to your hysterical exaggerations (you forgot to include tats, cornrows and do'rags) My point was that the league's dress code was aimed at a certain style of casual dress that has been very popular among mostly YOUNGER black men for awhile now. Frankly, I don't have a problem with the gear but apparently you do and I think the league's policy, except for the league events and on the bench stuff, is a bit silly. Especially, the part about to and from the game.
Also, I never said ALL black men dress that way. In fact, while Derrick Fischer was in violation of the dress code (lol) he was wearing normal sized t-shirt and jeans. You may not like or wear what a lot of the younger guys are rockin' and you may not have been influenced by hip-hop culture (whatever that means) but so what? It doesn't change the facts.

Re: Jonathan
Amare is no shrinking violet. He's had no problem bluntly criticizing the officiating previously in this series, calling the Spurs a dirty team, etc. I don't think he's going to say something he doesn't believe just to get in the good graces of NBA management.
Commentators on TNT and ESPN repeatedly brought the seemingly marginal infraction to the public's attention because they are ex-NBA players, and this rule has consistently been a point of emphasis by the league and been pounded into the players' brains - just like Pat Burke (the Suns reserve) said. No player has any doubt what the rule is and how it is enforced.
By the way, pretty much everytime Bush utters a statement, I reflexively believe it to be a lie.
-
Take Stern at his Word
Leaving aside for the moment whether one must always enforce the letter of the rule, or whether it is in fact applied consistently, Stern is essentially saying:
the league is changing the outcome of a series because two Phoenix Suns who knew about [a] rule [that has nothing to do with basketball] forgot about it, couldn't control themselves and didn't have coaches who could control them.
It has nothing to do with basketball. If the Spurs win in 6, the final tally will be Spurs 3, Suns 2, league 1.
