  • NHL conference final playoff predictions??

    Anyone???

Yes I know we're a third-tier sport now, somewhere between cricket and boxing on the American radar, but even a passing mention would be nice...

  • Dumbest Rule in Basketball

Why can a team move the ball 3/4 of the court by calling time out?

Imagine the effect on football of a similar (unbelievably dumb) rule

    A

  • andycher

Are you honestly comparing a team moving to halfcourt in basketball to moving to midfield in football?

  • NHL and beyond

I understand NHL is an acronym of some sort, but I'm having trouble placing it.

And I've never understood why someone would bitch about a rule that makes a game more competitive. Basketball often comes down to 3-6 seconds left, down two or three, and if the team can't advance the ball to half-court, the game is over. So the rule makes the game much more exciting, why would anyone be against that? And like the other writer pointed out, comparing football and basketball in terms of field/court position is idiotic to the extreme. Football is about time of possession and field position, basketball is...uh...not.

  • If You Want Rules To Make It Exciting And Competetive

Like advancing to midcourt without actually advancing the ball, why not just play the first 47 minutes, and then declare the game tied with a minute to go regardless of score.

  • Good Moment in Sports

Derek Fisher walking onto the floor was a nice moment. So many people deserve standing ovations for getting on with their day to day lives after suffering personal hardship. It’s nice to see someone actually get one.

  • Anything but SA or Det

    Booorrrriiiiinnnnngggg. esp the Spurs.

I wonder if Tim Duncan gives his wife 'The Look' everytime she tells him to unload the dishwasher or hang up his shirt or hints that he *might* be wrong.

I hope this GS/Utah series goes 7, as these are some entertaining games. I didn't watch that much NBA during the regular season, esp since watching my home team, the Indiana Pacers, was less entertaining than watching the goose in my backyard sit on its nest. But these two teams are fun to watch. Many very good but not great young hungry players who have coaches who let them play. So glad I don't have to deal w/SJax on my team anymore, the 00s answer to John Starks.

I also love that these two coaches refuse to spin the BS post-game in deference to player egos.

I hope that Dee Brown is going to be alright. That was a nasty collision. Anyone know what # draft pick Utah used 2 yrs ago to get D. Williams from Illini? I loved him in college and he has Jason kidd potential.

NHL predictions on my blog. Long story short- Sabres in 6, Ducks in 5.

    http://shavedice.blogspot.com

  • Ok, here's your NHL prediction

The Ducks will smoke the Red Wings in 5 or 6 games. Way too much talent on the Ducks, and the Wings can't count on lucky goals by Robert Lang to always bail them out.

The Senators' tough defense (Volchenkov is an animal) will push around and smash the Buffalo pretty boys (Briere, Maxim, Hecht, etc) into submission.

Ergo, Ducks will play Senators in Finals. I will wait to see these series before predicting who will win the Final.

  • NHL Predictions

I'll go Ducks in 6 against Detroit. They had enough firepower to beat a pretty defensive Canucks team (yeah, I know there were some injuries) in 5 games. Ducks look strong and rested.

Buffalo in 7. I'm a little nervous on this one. Something tells me it might be Ottawas year to beat expectations and we're due for some kind of upset.

Now, this basketball thing. Fans and writers make it sound so exciting but whenever I stumble upon it on television I lose interest so quickly. It just seems like nothing ever happens except scoring. No real checking, no real neutral zone action to speak of, no real defence. Wouldn't it be easier to just have a single basket and have the teams take turns having possesion or take turns slam dunking? I saw some strange basketball-like sport once where they were using trampolines. that loked kind of fun.

  • Deron Williams

Third overall pick in the 2005 draft.

    Thank you, wikipedia.

  • Canucks on bball

Jesus, you Canucks should just refrain from commenting on basketball; I avoid saying anything about your sport, with the toothless yahoos, the glove tossing and the haymakers and the puck that no one can follow on TV. Even the most cursory glance at the NBA, especially during the playoffs, shows what everyone has known since at least the late 80s Pistons -- defense wins championships. And just as I'm sure there are plays and strategy in hockey (though it remains mostly invisible to me and often seems like a rugby scrum on ice), basketball is an ever evolving series of set plays, defensive adjustments, and offensive counter-adjustments (the league is largely one of matchups and adjustments to offensive and defensive schemes). Not so many dunks, especially during the playoffs. I find it all beautiful and often impossibly graceful, though I can also appreciate the speed and grace of hockey, even if I find the messy way people score (flailing with pucks accidently careening off skates and such) a little deflating.

  • NHL prediction

I predict that a Stanley Cup series between Ottawa and Anaheim will get worse ratings than late night reruns of The Real McCoys.

And for those who make their picks based on mascots -- alternatively, the set-up for a joke, you provide the punchline -- who wins a fight between a duck and a Senator? (I'm picking the Senator, who could see that a road gets built through the duck's habitat. Of course in the duck vs. Vice President scenario, the lawyer ends up shot.)

  • Fisher

Was anybody else as outraged as I was when Fisher walked into the building wearing a T-shirt and jeans? If he isn't fined for that I am going to begin the most vicious letter-writing campaign this nation has ever seen. Don't test me, Stern.

  • dramatic fashion

King - I was right there with you until I read the part about taking the 10 month old daughter, who had just had eye surgery that morning, on a cross country flight just so Dad could play in his basketball game. I admire Derek Fisher but I would not have put a 10 month old, fresh from surgery, through that unnecessary hardship.
