King Kaufman's Sports Daily

In yet another BCS Championship Game rout, Florida grinds Ohio State into dust.

No fan of BCS but...

...if "routs" are the criteria for failure then the Super Bowl and the detalied playoffs that lead to it are also a huge failure.

Look, either you have playoffs or your don't. No system is foolproof, hence the term "any given Sunday."

I watched the game and wasn't rooting for anyone. My life continues on, with or without the BCS.

This And That

Yesterday revisited---I found a way to share the blame for Romo's dropped field goal hold costing the Cowboys the playoff game---The Cowboys lost 3 games at home in the last 4 games of the season, two by rout and capped off by a loss to the damn Lions. What the heck are they doing playing at Seattle in the first round anyhow? I think the blame can be spread from Head Coach down to the last sub.

It's looking like the year of the Gator....

April 2006 - Gators win NCAA Basketball Championship.

June 2006 - Miami Heat win NBA Championship with 2 Gator starters. (Jason Williams and Udonis Haslem)

October 2006 - St. Louis Cardinals win World Series - MVP Eckstein is a Gator.

January 2007 - Gators win NCAA Football Championship

And this coming April Gator basketball looking like one of the prohibitive favorites again. I'm not a Bears fan, but this is getting weird. I may have to plunk some money on the Gator Grossman to win the Super Bowl.

As far as that title game last night goes, I'm in King's corner. Just think, if the BCS had matched up Ohio State and Michigan, someone probably would have won 30-27 and nearly everyone would conclude the season thinking those two were clearly superior.

The Big Ten is certainly in question now. The Buckeyes and Wolverines lose 73-32 combined and the conference is 2-5 overall in bowls. The two wins being Penn State returning a fumble nearly 100 yards and a victory as Tennessee was about to score to probably win. And then Wisconsin who barely beat Arkansas in a neandrathal game where the Badgers barely had any offense at all. It appears the Big 10 had bulk and brute but not a lot of speed.

And if any Ohio State fans are using that injury as an excuse they need to be slapped with a penis. Right, one guy is out so that causes 82 total yards in 37 plays.

As usual, great column

Last night's game (sorry, exhibition) showed what a fraud the current system is.

Are you telling me that Ohio State is better than LSU, who would have played Florida much tougher than the Buckeyes on a neutral field? And how fun would it be to see Boise State play again?

We really need a playoff. I don't see what the problem would be to have the winners from the four BCS bowls square off in a tournament.

The semi-final games could be hosted by the higher seed (to eliminate the burden on the fans, and guarantee full stadiums) and then play the championship game on the dead week of the Super Bowl in the Rose Bowl (Grand-daddy of them all and the best college stadium).

I just don't see why this can't happen (other than greed).

4th and short

If you can't convert in that situation with a Heisman trophy winner in the backfield, you don't deserve to win. Tressel saved the world a lot of time with making that call and failing, signaling to us that it was OK to watch something else...the game was over.

Check Your TIVO

To be fair, the announcers did point out the hold during a replay of the kick return; I believe right before or after the first commercial break.

Go Gators!

Watching the game in Gainesville, I can tell you that everyone I was with also saw that clear hold on the run back, which just fanned the flames. But am I right in that Ginn got injured during the celebration in the end zone after that? I haven't seen anything about what exactly happened, but clearly that was premature on many fronts.

Crappy Officiating

Not just the blatant un-remarked upon hold of Reggie Nelson that sprung Ginn for the kickoff return. Don't forget the incomprehesible failure to overturn the Percy Harvin touchdown dive that made the score 14-7. Everyone in creation saw both knees go down with ball at about the 1 yard line. Then there was the ticky-tack roughing the passer call on Brandon Siler during the Buckeye's second quarter drive to make the score 21-14.

It was hard to pay much attention to how many calls were blown after that since Florida ran away with it. Hard to say if any or all of those calls had a serious effect on the outcome. But gosh dang they drive you crazy. Somebody help these officials.

That said, all hail THE University of Florida! Bow before the combined might of our (mostly) homegrown youthful heroes! The only school to hold both the Basketball and Football titles simultaneously- how about that, sportsfans?

Uh, wouldn't a college football tournament....

Take time away from the students' classes and studying?

After Watching Ohio State........

I have no idea why Florida State's record is what it was. Probably multiple facotrs and you'd have to be on the inside to know some of them. They have a boatload of hellacious athletes and a ton of speed. They concluded the season by damn near beating Florida, and then hanging 44 on UCLA in a rout. The UCLA who had recently beaten offensive-fireworks-show Southern Cal, holding them to 9 points.

With the speed they have they would give Ohio State all they wanted--the awesome, concensus number one throughout the season Ohio State. And Florida State 6th place in the so-called pathetic ACC. My guess is Florida State would beat them 4 of 10 on a neutral. Maybe more.

I think the biggest flaw in modern sports commentary and in the fans minds is that there is a signifigant difference in many of these teams--based on record or whatever else. It's bogus.

If you're going to screw with college football tradition...

...at least do it right. Get the top eight teams together in a three-round playoff for the national championship, and be done with it. Each game gets to inherit one of the original bowl names and gets played in the traditional venues. First round over the weekend before Christmas. Second round the weekend between Christmas and New Year's. The title game the Saturday after that in Pasadena. Basta.

The rest of the top 20 or 30 can play the remainder of those minor bowls named after software companies and chain restaurants whenever - on ESPN Ocho where they belong.
